What's new

Break-in at my new house!

As many of you are aware, my wife and I have been looking for a new house. We found one that just got finished being built and closed on it yesterday. Like most new homeowners we were very excited to move in and were planning to do so this Saturday. Yesterday I spent most of the day sealing the floors and going over my alarm that was going to be installed in a couple days and early this morning I finished coordinating the movers, cable company, etc.

Today I went to the house to put a final coat of sealant on the tile and when I arrived I found trim pieces in the yard. As much of the neighborhood is under construction I assumed they had fallen off of someones trailer. When I opened the garage door water was coming through the walls into the garage. I then inspected the front door which had been kicked in and my refrigerator was standing in the entry way. Every room in the house had standing water. Of course I contacted SAPD after clearing the house and they had already been out and completed their investigation (the builder reported it).

Later when speaking with the builder, it appears they tried to steal the refrigerator but got it stuck in the front door. He had to push the fridge back in to get into the house and found that they had left the water running where it connected to the back of the refrigerator. This resulted in water pouring into the house until he discovered it this morning and turned it off. These scumbags literally did thousands of dollars in damage and left empty handed.

Now I'm working with the builder to make sure all the water is out and replace damaged carpets, cabinets, and trim. This of course resulted in a delay in our move in time as well. It's been one of those days, thanks for listening to my venting.

That really sucks. Hopefully the damage will not add to much to your bill to repair.Hopefully all the rest of your time in your new house will only bring you good things.

Wow that sucks, when I first read the title I thought you meant you were breaking in the new hows with a shave and a party. Too bad I wasn't right! Hope that whole mess gets cleared up fast for you!

That is terrible. I hope everything turns out okay and that you and your wifey enjoy your new home.

WARHAWK

I lightly know how you're feeling. We were in our new house in an incredible neighborhood for a month when I left for work and found my car had been broken in and they went thru everything in the console, glovebox, etc. nothing is safe in this world anymore.

That is an awful story. Hope insurance covers everything and this just becomes an unfortunate story to tell years from now!

Thanks guys, unfortunately it's likely they won't be caught. On the upside I'm in Texas so eventually they'll either quit on their own or pick the wrong house and someone will help them quit.

Our builder is being great about it and orchestrating the repairs for us. It really helps make a bad event better.

I really do want to visit Texas, though I have to say I'll let the home owners take care of the vermin hunting. At least the builder is still on site so he will be able to get stuff fixed and has most if not all of his equipment on hand to repair the damage!

Unbelievable!
As awful as it is, it may be better that it happened now rather than when you'd settled in and it was fully a home.
Watch out for return visits.

I feel for you. When I was a teenager, our house got broken into 2 times. Nothing worse than seeing your mom cry. I told her to not take it personal, and I hope you don't either. But I konw what your going thru

In Canada, a break and enter carries the same penalty as Murder 2. but no judge would every hand down that sentence

Ughhhh, man o man - what is there to say but am sorry this had to happen. Honestly there are times the best solution is to step into the woods and have a good scream. Then get back at it constructively. Jeepers.

Look, in three years you guys will be able to look back on it with, "Remember when we were getting ready to move in?"

Sorry to hear that this happened Chris. Karma will do for you what you wish you could do for these mopes. Hang in there!

I'm feeling much calmer this morning, what's done is done. We're trying to make the best of it and looking at doing some of our upgrades now (flooring in particular) since all the carpet had to go. I guess the other upside is that we were way behind on our packing; now we have a couple more weeks.

I am now selling my house of 35 years because of the constant danger. Many cases like your here, although they are not after appliances, they are after the copper pipes...most of the crooks here are heavily armed as well...thinking of leaving the country, you really need a million $$$ to live in a safe neighborhood in the SF bay area...

Come to Canada, people also steal copper here but they are usually smart enough to go for wire in industrial parks. Though one group tried to steal some from a small maintenance shack in Vancouver, cut through all the wires to find out every last one was fibre optics.

That sucks, I've had the same thing happen to one of my houses, just the opposite direction. We were moving out and somebody busted in and vandalized my house. (I knew who, lacked proof and wasn't about to do time for that idiot)

In the end I hope the insurance and the builder make you whole. Sometimes post closing they can get a little sketchy.
