Brass razors

I like the look of "new" brass razors, but don't care for the patina/tarnish look as they age. Can the original shiny look be preserved by applying some sort of coating, or is the /patina/tarnish appearance inevitable? Thanks

Если бритва не частая и Вы ей собираетесь пользоваться, то лучший никелировать или посеребрить , наверное. Каждый сам решает, что для него лучше. И в Путине есть своя красота)))

I have quite a few brass and bronze razors. They are very easy to keep bright and shiny. A polishing cloth does the trick most of the time and if it needs more, a hand polishing with Simichrome or an other metal polish does the trick.

Another member reported his newly acquired brass razor turned black when soaked in Babacide overnight.
There are better, less risky methods to maintain brass razors, like SimiChrome polish or Flitz.

YMMV
That was me. I received this brass Karve CB in pristine condition from the seller. Cleaned it up when it arrived and put it into a Barbacide bath. Forgot about it, (we all know how life happens) for 24 hours, more like 30 hours. When I fished it up out of the Barbacide, this is what it looks like now.

Welcome @Kandid, can you please post your replies in English so that we can all understand what you are saying.

Don't get me wrong, this thing shaves like a machine. The tarnished finish is just cosmetic, and I do plan to address it at some point. The darkened finish, was shocking and traumatic at first (I had spent a fistful of money on this rig) has started to grow on me. So I'm not in a huge hurry to clean it up. I'm the only kid on my block with a blacked out Karve CB.

If the razor is not frequent and you are going to use it, then it is probably better to nickel plate or silver. Everyone decides for themselves what is best for them. And Putin has its own beauty)))

That's what Google Translate says he wrote.

In his defense, I have at rare times been known to post comments after drinking alcoholic beverages. At the time of posting, I am convinced they are of the highest quality of wittiness. The day after...I sometimes have my doubts.

Also, I think he meant "patina", not "Putin". That is not Google translate, but my own memory of college Russian. I'm almost certain he didn't say "Putin". "Путине" would be pronounced like Pee-you-tee-nyeh. Or approximately.

[edit] In his second post he corrects himself to "patina" rather than "Putin".

Man, I actually really like that forced patina over the bright, high shine. Antiqued brass or pewter is what it looks like. Wouldn't characterize it as "black".

AKA: forced patina.

Have you tried polishing it?...or do you like it like that?

Any tomato-based condiment (ketchup, hot sauce) and an old t-shirt will remove tarnish from brass. Just rub it on and wipe it off. I would finish with some dish soap and a toothbrush.

...or a polishing cloth like a Cape Cod Cloth will work with less abrasion than a compound.
