Box of razors!

Keep it in the family i say:thumbup1: my daughter helps a freind out on the weekends, selling jewelry at markets/car boot sales etc, so i asked her to keep an eye out for razors, last week she asked around, and a woman told her that she has a box of razors from her late father who was a barber, just had this text from my daughter "the woman has 8 razors, a brush and a long leather thingy, they need a clean but 1 is called a wade and butcher, she wants £25 for the lot, do u want them", guess my answer, though i now think i will have to sell a few of mine as they are piling up:laugh:

Nice score Wayne!

I hope they are all ok, my daughter did say the steel bit, which i assume is the blade, are not broken, she is popping them in on her way home, so i will update you later on.

Worst case: you've got some nice letter openers ready for Christmas presents and a "long, leather thingy" for yourself!

Just had the box, pics to follow, the w&b is shot, but 11 razors altogether, including a hamberg ring, thiers, bengall and fredrick reynolds, a brush, a strop that is really dirty but free of nicks and.....a hone, i will need help identifying this hone.

Pics and help time! the razors are thiers issard, hamberg ring, r.burnett, nowlins, fredrick reynolds, bengal, eimo, agilr fondu, joseph alen, james barber and a w&b, (some spelling mistakes might be here, as i need to clean them up really to 100% see the names) the wade is at the bottom of the pics, and the blade is at an angle from toe to heel, looking at this razor its not wear, but has been honed this way, its still sharp, any ideas why? all the razors need a good clean, but all the edges are free from any damage and chips, i have pics of strop and hone separately. Also there is a newspaper clipping in the box from may the 3rd 1932, and a empty oxo can and some black ink!

The strop is shell horsehide, and also written on it is no 49 and roma, its has a canvas strip on the back, the hone, this is where i need help, the black line on the surface is not a crack, but runs through the stone, that is flat, the dark side has some wear, but nothing to drastic, the wear seems to be in the centre, so 1) what is it, 2)how do i clean it, 3)how to i flatten the dark side plus perhaps a quick flatten of the light side, and how do i use it? and is it a bevel setter or finisher?

If the strop isn't cracked you should be able to do something with it. You might need to sand the leather with a high grit sandpaper (> 1000) to remove anything that could catch the edge...

To restore it, this is what I did: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?p=2334245

Thanks luc, the strop is in very good condition, i gave it a good cleaning tonight, and found no cracks, nicks or cuts, and it feels very good, i will give it a light sanding tomorrow, and follow the link you gave me and see how it goes, thanks again for the info and advice:thumbup:

That's a Coticule/BBW combo stone. I flatten mine on a Course DMT. A few Sheets of rough grit sandpaper on a flat surface (Granite tile, glass pane) would work too.

Nice score.

What are the measurements on the stone? Looks in the 7"x1 5/8" range, but that's a guess.

It looks like papa was a pretty busy and by the looks of it...a damn good barber to need so many razors, hones and other nick-nacks! How old are the razors, do you think? Are they still safe/in any condition to be used?

There was a news paper clipping in the box from 1932, and all the razors are usable, after cleaning honing etc, i was suprised at this, out of the 11 razors, no nicks or chips in any blades!
