What's new

Bought this today. Don't know why.

Hey guys,

So I was walking around a flea market today since I was bored, and saw this. I don't need it, don't really know what it is exactly, don't know how it shaves or anything and yet I bought it. I need help! I can't just go around buying razors for no reason and wasting money. Sigh. But I have it now, so I cleaned it up a little. Just wondering if anyone can identify it for me (I think Super Speed? But that's all I know) and let me know how it shaves? Is it milder or more aggressive than an EJ DE89?

Also, I think this case had some blades in it or something? Can anyone help me identify which? Again, I don't need to spend more money on this thing, but I have a case of OCD and need this set to be complete (hopefully it won't cost me more than a few bucks... hopefully). I don't need the blade box to look nice, or even have blades in it. Just the right box for the set to go in there would make me happy. If someone could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful!

Thanks!

Looks like a 40's style Super Speed to me. Someone else may be able to narrow it down more. I hope you got it for a good price at least.

If the case is original it's either a 1951-53 40's style Super Speed. It probably has either a W, X or Y date code on the bottom of the baseplate. The reason you bought it is because you have incredibly good taste in DE razors. Use any DE blade with it and it will treat you well. They are wonderfully smooth, but mild shavers. Enjoy!!

Edit: Definitely looks like a 1953 (Y date code) after looking at the endcaps closer.

Thanks so much for the information! It does say "REG US" and a Y below that. I hope this razor is a bit more aggressive than the DE89 since I find the DE89 to be as mild as I would like to use. Any milder and I feel like it won't work so well for me.

Now to try and find one of those blade boxes! Would these blade boxes come up for sale at times on the BST here?

Cheers!

That Super Speed in my opinion will be even milder than the DE89, but not in a bad way. They're super smooth and easy to use, plus more maneuverable in tight areas, to me at least. I love all Super Speeds, but the 40s style in particular is a really great razor.

Your Super Speed was manufactured in 1953 as indicated by the letter Y indicator. There should also be a number stamped on the opposite side to indicate the Quarter that the razor was manufactured. As others have stated, the Super Speed is a mild razor.

Put a Feather in that baby and enjoy the ride!

Ah man I always seem to find mild razors! The two weeks ago I bought a ball end tech which is also very mild, and now this haha. Oh well. Just another razor to try I guess!

And yes the other side does have a number, it says 1.

Thanks for the help!

It is very common to see the blade dispensers for sale either alone or as a lot on the bay. Many of them are in NOS condition. You don't really want to use the blades to shave, so a fair price is whatever it's worth to you to have a "more complete" set. I haven't seen any for sale on the BST, unless they came with the razor/case, in quite a while..... but you never know. You could always post a WTB (wanted to buy) on the BST and see if someone responds as well.

First Quarter of 1953, nice razor you have there. I own several vintage razors and one new DE razor and I must admit that my Super Speed is fast becoming my favorite razor to date. The "mild" razors as both you and I put it are actually a very nice item to have in any collection. For me, they make a great "benchmark" razor for testing out new blades.

It is one of a few that can "tame" the Feather even after a few shaves.

Enjoy that razor, she's a beauty.

Very nice razor. A good find indeed. I would have bought it. That's a 40's Super Speed made in the first quarter of 1953. They were made from 1947 - 1954.

You never have to have a reason to buy a vintage DE! A 40's style SS is next on the list for me. My mother found a case for one the other day while she was antiquing, so it follows that I should need the razor that goes in it!

Thanks guys! From the sounds of it, this may be a pretty nice razor after all. I might have to try it soon.

And yes I did notice that it was in really nice condition when I picked it up, which is one of the reasons I decided to just go for it. There was also another razor, exactly the same lying there but without the box and it looked to be in terrible condition. And was $2 less haha. So it was a no brainer to pick the one with the box.

Also, I can't post in the BST yet for the blade case since I'm not old enough in forum days haha. Although I did register over 2 years ago, but my account was deleted :/ but that's neither here nor there.

Anyone have an opinion on the ball end tech vs this? The ball end tech is the other vintage I bought a couple weeks ago and haven't tried. Might end up only keeping one of the two. I don't want to start collecting razors that I don't use. I don't have the space or the funds!

So I tried this last night.

Very mild compared to my DE89. But not in a bad way, it was just a different experience. It was also so much lighter than the DE89 and that I could really feel while shaving. In fact I almost felt like I preferred the weight of it to the EJ because it was much easier to use a light touch with the razor itself being so light. It did also work a little better on my upper lip ATG which is the worst part for me when I shave. I did still get weepers but it felt easier.

On the downside, I believe my shave was not quite as close as usual. But that may just be me not being used to the razor.
