Bought a Merkur Futur

As usual on my days off I browse shaving websites to look for potential buys. At first I had C&F cream and a pack of Feathers...until I looked in the razor section, phoned up the company and they sold me a Merkur Futur which was originally out of stock, but as we got talking they took one from a set. Anyhoo, the cream and the blades were abandoned and my third DE and fourth razor overall (Feather Artist aside) is going to be with me tomorrow.

For a person who's never used one, what setting should I go for if I shave everyday, have light growth, and already own a 34C and an R89? I also like a close shave.

I'd start at two just to see how it goes. My Futur eventually found it's way to 5.5 where it stayed until I sold it.

Hello, I've used a Merkur Futur as my go to razor for quite a while and my setting has been 2.5 and I get a very close and comfortable shave. I also nave two other razors but all they do is collect dust ! I have what I consider a normal of beard if that makes any sense. The Futur is heavy enough to wack that beard with very little pressure, this is one reason why I really enjoy the Futur . You can also hear this razor sing as it does it's job. Good luck to you and I'm sure you'll enjoy your new razor !

I've used a Futur for a while and it hasn't gone above 1.5 and I get a great shave. Start low and go up from there based on how the razor treats you. Great purchase, btw - I love mine.

I got my hands on it after getting back from work. Can't use it until tomorrow as this mornings shave was so close. I'm glad I pushed for the shiny chrome version. Looks and feels very different from my 34C and R89. It has a new Feather blade ready to go in the morning!

I just converted to a futur. I started at 2, and have worked my way up to beyond the 6 within about a week, at the recommendation of another forum member. It shaves very smoothly at the higher settings, but be warned... Treat it with respect and don't get sloppy with your technique.

I sliced my nose pretty bad trying to shave the top of my moustache. At the higher settings, the blade is up pretty high and is unprotected on the sides.

pro tip (also from a forum member): rub your fingers on your alum block to keep a solid grip on the futur and make adjustments easy. It can get a little slippery when wet.

Had my first shave and wow. Certainly a leap up from the 34C and R89, I'd say the price is justified. Of course they are all great but there is a difference in the feel to how the Futur shaves. I got close to a BSS but need to practice with it. The 2 - 2.5 setting seems about right for me right now. Might bump up to a 3 to see how it goes.
