Boar Brush

I recently purchased a boar brush. Although the bristles are soft; they are as not dense as my made in china brush. Can anyone advise me of a quality boar brush with dense bristles?

I am fond of the Omega 31064 series brushes. I am not sure they are the densest boar, but I believe they are one of the best available. The other members speak highly of the Omega 48 and 49 type brushes. They may be the densest boars available. Shoeboxshaveshop has some Boreal boar brushes that are very stiff, to the point of being hard to break in. I currently have in my boar rotation a 31064, 31156 and a Semogue 1305. The 1305 has the smaller diameter knot. They all perform superbly. I had a Vulfix vs/1 that I had been using for about 6 months. It was initially very stiff and took about a month of constant use to finally get soft. Unfortunately it started to lose 3-4 hairs every time I shaved with it. When it dried out I could see two or three more hairs starting to come out. I really like the Vulfix handle and I put in a 22mm, Golden NIb, Finest badger knot last week.

Boar hair is so stiff that you don't necessarily need a super dense knot to make it grab a lot of soap and lather up a storm. I have a $10 omega that works just fine.

Thanks for input. I have a Marvy brand boar, which I picked up from the beauty supply, and I have a Vulfix# VS/5 Pure Bristle. I am shaving with a Merkur 38C, chrome razor. I've been using Wilkinson Sword blades, which I purchased at my local grocery store; they are 5 for $.99. YES! So much for the "systems." The Wilkinson blades work well, and I have some Derby blades, which also work well.
I'm using the C.O. Bigelow (Proraso) shaving cream, in the tube. As stated earlier: The Vulfix brush has softer bristles, but it doesn't seem to be packed as tightly.

I currently have the drug store VDH boar and was thinking of getting an Omega 31064....significant difference? What does everyone think? Opinions would be great to help me make my decision.

Same here. CVS has a sale going on for VDH boar brushes and I bought one last night for less than $4.

I just purchased a Semogue 620 Shaving Brush tonight. I think for the price the Semogue boar brushes are the best boar brushes you can buy. If you want a larger brush the 2000 may be the way to go. Here is the site I purchased mine from. http://vintagescent.com/

Like a couple others have stated, the omega brushes are hard to beat. I have an omega 49 and I really like it, couldn't ask for a better brush for the price ($11 shipped).

I'm thinking of getting a semogue after reading all the great reviews. Trying to hold off to see how the 830 performs compared to the 620 and 1305. They are a little more expensive than some of the omegas but they are still much cheaper than comparable badgers.

Long story short, I wouldn't get hung up on trying to find a boar with a dense knot, just get a good quality boar and you'll be happy.

Another positive for the Omegas.
I have two omega professional brushes (10048 & 20102) and they are excellent brushes.
If you don't like large lofts go for a normal omega, but otherwise professional all the way.

I have three Omega Boar Brushes. The 10048, the 10066, and the 81052. They are all good brushes, and all can be had for under $20. I had the VDH brush, and there is no comparison. The Semogue Boars have been getting alot of press around here lately, but I have not used one to be able to compare. I think the Omega's are a little more reasonable though, I have not been able to glean from any reviews real value for the price difference.

I had an Omega and a Semogue(1520), and given the choice I would pick the Omega every time, though I do wish the loft had been a little shorter.

I have the Vulfix VS5 too and I love it for use with shave sticks only. For a puck of soap, I would highly recommend the Semogue 620, beautiful acrylic handle with a really dense knot, it picks up a lot of soap and holds enough lather for my full 3 pass shave.
