Boar brush recommendation

I'm looking to try a boar brush and was wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a good one to start with. I currently use an EJ and a Parker pure badger but want to give the boar brush a try. Am looking to keep it in the $40 range if possible so I could have somewhat of an even comparison to the ones I have as far as quality, performance, and price.
Currently using TOBS and Proraso cream and col conk soap (razorback cream on the way)

I also need to keep it down to 1 purchase as SWMBO has begun questioning all the packages I've been getting since I started wet shaving.

Thanks for any suggestions

If you bowl lather I would say the Semogue Owners Club boar brush from Vintage scent (google for 10% discount code) Mine came to $27 shipped from Europe to OK. If you face lather I would recommend the B&B essential for $20 + s/h from WCS. The Omega 10049 is good one too at around $9 + s/h but it's a little big for face lathering.

I bought the purple Badger & Blade Omega boar from westcoastshaving for $20. After doing the "quick break in" with soaking it in lather/water for a few hours and then overnight staying lathered up for 3 days, any "boar" smell is gone and it feels really nice. Highly recommended.

The only other brush that comes to mind is a Semogue Owners Club, which is (to my understanding and reading) the best boar brush out there and can be bought for well under $40 from Vintagescent or ebay.

I almost bought a SOC (Semogue Owners Club) in cherry today . . . I still might, as the day is young!

If I had to buy only 1 boar brush . . . I'd probably go with the SOC unless you really like the purple B&B handle. My admittedly not-fully-informed 2 cents.

I would definitely read the thread on breaking boar brushes in quickly. http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/139297-How-To-Break-In-A-Brush-amp-Get-The-Funk-Out

I just received my very first boar brush about a week ago. On a fellow member's recommendation, I ordered the B&B Essential boar brush from WCS. I've only used it a few times so far but I really like it. If it only gets better as it breaks in (as they say) then I anticipate a long, loving relationship with it.

I hear you about the SWMBO questions...same goes here.

I like the SOC and B&B Essential Brush, too.

I have a vulfix 404, its pretty cheap but I find it does a great job and really stands up against my badger brush in terms of perfomance. I have a cheap Omega travel brush which cost £5, its just for traveling but it does a great job too.

+1
I like the SOC so much I'm getting ready to purchase another one so I can use one every day.

I say the Omega Pro 49. It's only $9.00 at West Coast Shaving and it's a fantastic brush. As good as my favorite brush which I paid $85.00 for. Nice looking too.

I'd definitely recommend the Semogue SOC Boar over any other Boar brush I know.
Also, you should get some hard soap like Tabac to take full advantage of the boar hair. Try it, I believe you're in for a nice surprise. :wink2:

Thanks for all the replies. Have decided to go with the SOC and will be ordering it this week.

Just remember if you order from vintagescent you trade the low cost for a longer shipping time (worth it for me). The SOC also takes longer to break in compared to an Omega boar.

as many have said above, the SOC is also my recommendation.

great handle, engraved logo/script, super soft tips when broken in (break it in nightly with a crummy soap).

it's a Lather Making machine

mine is in rotation for the past week and has me wondering "why do I buy $200 badger brushes when this works just as well".

If you order from Vintagescent, you might as well go for the SOC. Pretty much the best boar brush made and from that site it's like $2 more than I paid for my 830. The 830 is amazing, though.

Bruce...I recently picked up my first boar brush (B&B Essential - purple) and I really like it so far. I was tempted to by the SOC that you speak of but was concerned that the brush may be too large. Would you be able to compare it to the bloom of a Duke 3, for example? I know..goofy question, but I think you can see what I'm trying to say. I face lather exclusively. Thanks.

^ I don't have a Duke to compare it too, but if you look in my wiki, I'd be glad to give you a pic next to any other brush. it does has a large fan and splays quite a bit during lathering.

it is a larger knot and I mainly use it for bowl lathering as I use my ultra soft badgers for face lathering. many do use it, so it's just personal preference.
