Blade recommendations for a red tip.

Hi Guys, I've been shaving for a few months using a Gillette red tip & 7oclock Greens super stainless, and I'm still having some irritation.

My beard is pretty heavy and I'm doing a 2 WTG an 1XTG. Using tabac puck and mama bears shaving sticks.

I just ordered a "Everything" sample pack from West coast shaving, plus a few extra packs of Gillette 7oclock yellows and feathers.

I also have a Merkur HD barber pole, but don't' use it often enough.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

IMO you may be treating your skin too harsh. The red tip is said to be kind of an aggressive beast. I'd advise doing only one WTG pass and pay special attention not to press down too much, getting the angle right.

If the desired level of closeness is not achieved try a bit more of prepping: While your shaving brush is soaking with warm/hot water wash your face with warm water and rub in some shave soap (Tabac is good for that!). That way the hairs can be cut more easily.

I just got my red tip yesterday and tried it with a 7 o'clock yellow and it was the best shave I've ever had. That's the only one I've tried so far and like you I have the sample pack plus a pack of bluebirds I'm itching to try.

The very idea of a Red Tip and Feather combo scared the heck out of me till I tried it, best shave I've ever had, but be aware of the "needle bristle effect" that does affect some people (me included)

Feathers are the best in my Red Tip. The aggressiveness of the Red Tip is overrated as well. I have become so accustomed to shaves with an Adjustable set to 9 (Super, Slim, and Fatboy), as well as a slant, and "G" model schicks, that anything less than a Feather in my red tip does not get the job done. As Always, YMMV.

I use my red tip nearly every day, with either a Gillette yellow or a feather (one of the ones from pauldog out of his 250-pack). I have to say that the red tip/feather combo gives me the best shave I've ever had, on a consistent basis. As others have said, YMMV. I do one WTG, one ATG, and one XTG.

The Red tip is also favourite of mine, stick with it your used to it, using Yellows or Feathers should improve things for you.

I just picked up a red tip on the weekend and I have used it everyday. I am currently using Wilkinson blades in it with good results. My wife has been in Toronto for the past few days and stopped at TBBS and picked up 7 packs of Feathers (no place in Windsor sells them :mad3: )

Anyways, I am looking forward to trying the feathers in the new red tip.

Wife got home from Toronto with feathers in hand. I had a nice hot shower and then lathered up and threw a new feather into the red tip and did a very nice one pass shave. Great shave, will take a little to get used to the sharpness of the feathers with the agressiveness of the red tip but it turned out well. I even did a two pass on my head with good results and just a little blood loss. Will have to be more careful next time.

I shave every day with a Gillette Red Tip and Gillette 7 O'Clock sharp edge yellows. For me, it works perfectly.
