Bevel setting and a coti

I just recently bought and received a coti to use for my honing needs. Now before this, I had a DMT 1200 I was using to set my bevels. Since I will probably use the dilucot method with the coti, will I better served to set the bevel with my DMT and then start on the second stage of the dilucot to continue honing or should I just use the coti for all stages. I've never honed on a coticule before so I'm looking for advice before getting started. Thanks in advance.

Set the bevel on the DMT and when it shaves arm hair go to the coti w/ slurry and use either the dilucot or unicot method (I prefer dilucot). Read up on coticule.be and you will have a wealth of information.

Ya I was going to go with the dilucot.

I've actually have spent a lot of time on coticule.be. Was a big reason I decided to get a coticule.

I still set my bevels on a 1k, then move to the coti, i have set bevels with my coti, but they took longer that way, though i am no expert here:laugh:

If you are going to remove the scratch marks left by a coarse hone it seems to me that you will be effectively be resetting (re-correcting) the bevel on the coticule, so why bother setting (correcting) the bevel on the coarse hone? I'm not saying using the coarse hone is bad or incorrect, heck I have done it many times before, instead I was trying to spur a discussion.

Use the coticule to reset a bevel, it shouldn't take long at all. Use a thin slurry, too thick will dull the edge if you're not careful. You should be able to shave arm hair after a few sets of 15 halfstrokes, all coticules are different so it takes experimentation.

After you know you can set a bevel and shave arm hair try dulled on a glass and starting over with dilution steps to help you know your stone.

I sold all my DMT diamond plates (except my D8XX and D8X, which I use exclusively for knives and lapping) and just do bevel correction and chip removal on my coticules now. I'm not running a razor restoration business, though.

I bought a coti for all my needs. Unless you're trying to reshape straights or fix a major frown, the coti should be all you need. It's definitely good for maintenance of a healthy razor.

Thanks for all the input everyone. Seems as people are a little split on this. Maybe I'll try both ways and see what works best.

Ok first go at the coticule last night. Deicded to do the whole process with a King Cutter I had. After watching Bart's video on the dilucot method, felt pretty confident. Now after saying that, Bart you make it look very easy. I found my stone dried out quicker then yours in your video. I take it that's more from experience then anything. Had to refresh my slurry once. Other then that it seemed to go ok. Shaved with it this morning and it's probably the smoothest straight shave I've had but that's not saying much with less then twenty total shaves under my belt. I'll say the shave with this razor before the coticule compared to this morning was different. I consider the first time a success. That being said I know I can get a better edge with practice and that's what I'll do. Next one I'll try setting the bevel on my DMT and see what difference it makes. Thanks again for all the advice everyone.

I started having this problem when I moved from the East Coast to a desert. The trick is keeping the surface wet without accelerating the dilution.

I'm thinking with cold weather up here it may be a little drier. Tried to start with a lot of water to begin with but just seemed to disappear really quick. Even with adding a small drop after a set of half strokes in each direction.

I have the same setup (DMT 1200 and two coticules). Usually I go with my coticules all the way from bevel setting to final polish (I use the unicot method). On a recently acquired razor, I just could not get the heel to sharpen so I went to the DMT 1200 with a little bit of pressure and circles and it solved the problem. I will however use the coticule with slurry on most occassions. If the slurry is right and you're honing a hollow ground razor, it won't take you very long before it comfortably shaves hair.

Just an update on this. Last night I honed a Genco razor I have. Used my DMT to set the bevel instead of the coticule and compared to using the coticule through all stages like my first razor, this seemed to make a huge difference. Razor honed up very nicely and I probably had my best shave with a straight razor last night. Think for the time being, this will be the way I go until I get used to the coticule. Was a great feeling start to finish last night.

Yep. :thumbup1:

Question is. Is it the method or the razors?

Try using the dmt with the king cutter and the coti for the genco and see if the results hold true.

feels great, doesn't it!

i currently use a similar progression, although my dmt i start with is C (325) -> F (600) --> coticule. I am also trying to figure out if the C12K i have is finishing finer (or not) than coticule with just water.

i supposedly have a set of naniwas SS coming to me that i'd like to try out...
