Best Simpson Brush

Personally I think the best bang for the buck is the Berkeley. Not so dense as to be a lather hog, has excellent flow-through, softish with good backbone, excellent for face lathering soaps (and probably creams, too), and is modestly priced. And it looks good!

My vote goes to the Special. Sees more service than my Duke 1, which is a fine brush. Just prefer smaller brushes. Must try the Berkeley someday.

After spending some time on research, I ordered the X2L in Best Badger. A lot of people, including Marko, had good things to say about it. I have used it about a dozen times now and really like it. I mostly face-lather but have used it to bowl-lather a couple of times too with great results. Make sure to keep my endorsement in perspective since I am new to DE shaving and the only other brushes I have used are a VDH pure bristle and a Tweezerman. I just wanted to put my two cents in since I am so pleased. I should also mention that I did not limit my research to Simpson brushes. Good luck!

I've owned about 9 Simpsons over the last few years. The Duke 3 in 2-band is the only one that I have left.

I like the Special, but I like small brushes. Been thinking about a Duke, but now I want to take a look at the Berkeley, too.

Funny you should ask. Just last night I was looking again at the whole array of Simpson brushes. I like to look at them on the Superior Shave site, since they line them up neatly and give dimensions, and you can just scroll down the page and compare, not having to keep opening new windows: http://thesuperiorshave.com/Simpsons_Brushes.html#E1

I have fourteen brushes, only one a Simpson--a Duke 2 in best. It is an excellent brush, denser than any of my others, and the go-to brush for face lathering. Still, my heart yearns toward a Chubby 1 in Super. The next really good brush I get will be either that or a Shavemac DO1 in two-band, or a similar Thater. If I were to die and go to heaven, all three brushes would be waiting for me as I entered the pearly gates.
