Best shaving Old Type?

I have only shaved with one Old Type (a bulldog) and was wondering what you guys considered to be the best shaver among this style.

I have never used my Old Type or New (goodwill) with the stock handles. I have a standard Bull Mastiff handle and a Bull Mastiff Ultra Light handle in black. I have been switching them back and forth. I have yet to find anything can even come close to these shavers. I guess a straight would be the only other option for a closer shave. I'm on a mission to find an original New with stock handle in mint condition.

the gillette new is the perfect DE, especially if paired with a custom handle

I have a ball-end New, but with the hollow shaft on the handle I find it too light. I was sort of planning on trying a bull mastiff next year. My budget for this year is severely depleted. :biggrin1:

Bull Mastiff is the bomb! I have one with a new and an old head. Haven't tried the old yet...keep telling myself next shave...ok next shave....you get the picture! I have shaved with the old style on the ball end handle, my intro to open combs, and I thought it shaved great! Very mild shave, but still a close 2-3 pass shave. With the extra weight of the BM handle, it may be the perfect shave with the old style head......I just can't quit using the new style on it!!!

Bull Mastiffs rule!

Same here but the Old Type I have with a heavy brass handle is one fine shaving razor so I recommend the pocket editions.

Would be cool if one of you fellers started an Old Type Gillette Shavers Group here and sent me an invite

I'm partial to my Bulldog......:001_smile
Me too, one of my favorites.

But to me, there's just something so special about the Double Rings. Shaving with Gillette's first ever mass marketed razor. And of course I love the Single Rings too...

Well, this may be telling in what you'll find the best... see below.
I am very partial to my ABC Pocket Eds.... They are maneuverable, solid..., and distinctive!

All true there, plus that have a superb "heft" and balance to them, which may be exactly what the OP is looking for. Of course, the Big Fellow Old Type is special (and weighty!) too, but not as nimble as the ABC Pocket Editions. If you've not yet tried one, you should :thumbup1:.

Interesting question, Emmett. You will get different answers depending on how one shaves and what degree of aggressiveness one likes. First off understand that the Old Type is a little more aggressive then the straight bar razor. But I'll use that as an analogy.

I consider the ABC pocket the Tech of the Old Types. It's very smooth and easy to use. It has great balance.

I consider the Single and Double Ring the super speed. You will get a nice close shave. Not too aggressive.

The Bulldog is like the Aristocrat #66 or early 50's style. It is elegant and a pleasure to use. It is a little heavier so requires a little more attention.

The Big Fellow is for real mean. It is heavy and with the long handle requires more attention to technique. It can be aggressive but when I shave with it I hold the handle in the center. That allows me to attain perfect balance and control the pressure.

So for me I like them all. I enjoy shaving with them all but they are a little different. You should own at least one of each. They are a joy.

Thank you for the breakdown, Len. I would like to try them all eventually. The Bulldog is a little more aggressive than I really need, but as you said, it's just darn nice to use.

I didn't try a lot of old types but out of those I tried, Hoffritz was the best.
