Best "Oh, My!" Freezing Aftershave?

Thus far, for shaving, I have settled on C.O. Bigelow (Proraso) and Kiss My Face Cool Mint Shave Cream for the hot summer months here in Oklahoma.

However, I really want to top off that cool, minty shave with a real face - freezing aftershave.

I want something nice and COLD!

I mean, splash it on and gasp "Oh My God!", take my breath away COLD!

Perhaps some incarnation of a Thayer's Witch Hazel?

Yes, I admit I am new and somewhat proletarian (read Aqua Velva) when it comes to this, but as a postman I really want something COLD to start me off right in the heat of an Oklahoma summer day!

I wouldn't mind something that I could splash on now and then just to stay refreshed throughout the day.

Again, I want it COLD!

Perhaps some of you Aussies or Texans out there might suggest something.

Regards,

David

All the high menthol content aftershaves will do it, skin bracer, pitralon etc. Check out the review section on aftershaves, good info and experiences of products.

Down here in Texas, we call that stuff ICE. Crushed or cubed would be fine for your application, but I would tend to avoid any ice labeled "dry".

You know, that really isn't a bad idea (aside from dry ice).

Come to think of it, a small cooler filled with water and crushed ice wouldn't be bad at all to splash on now and again while making the rounds on a hot, summer day.

Thanks for the suggestion, Tex!

Leave it to a Texan to come up with a practical solution!

David

I'll do that.

I might just combine your advice with that of the Texan that followed. Toss in something mentholated into a small chest of water and crushed ice.

That would indeed be cold!

Thank You!

Another suggestion. If you want to have a refreshing and truly pleasant day, add beer to the cooler. Repeat as needed!

You will not find anything colder than Osage Rub. Trust me, nothing. It's basically like applying pure menthol to your face.

Billy Jealousy Shaved Ice Balm. Technically it isn't a splash, it is a gel, but it is not tacky and it will freeze your face. No burn, great citrus scent and COLD.

Try 444 balm as well...just mix with your AS of choice, and you'll get a nice long lasting menthol effect. Only place I know of that has it is from Leon at Vintage Scent (and his web store is back up and working again). I just ordered four tubes...can't wait!

Alt Innsbruck is like applying dry ice to your skin following a shave. I love the stuff, but can't use it in the winter.

Just for comparisons sake, I figured I'd list the 10 strongest mentholated aftershaves I can think of in descending order of potency of "freeze factor":

1. Osage Rub
2. Stephan's Alpine
3. Alcolado Glacial
4. Alt Innsbruck
5. Barbasol Brisk
6. Aqua Velva
7. Clubman Menthol
8. 444
9. TSD Sub Zero (thanks for the bottle, John!)
10. Everything else...

I'd put Osage Rub as #1 on the list of store-bought items from an actual corporation. But nothing, and I mean NOTHING, beats getting one of the artisan soapmakers (Mama Bear, TSD, etc.) to create a custom extra-EXTRA Menthol aftershave.

I have 6 bottle of Osage Rub, which tells you how much I love it. However, the two coldest, most absolute freezing things I've ever tried is a custom Mama Bear's Peppermint/Menthol order in which I requested maximum Menthol. That *was* the coldest, until JoAnna at TSD made a custom Subzero Ice splash for me, and I requested "too much Menthol." That one makes Osage Rub feel tame by comparison.

Rob (or anyone else who knows),

What are the ingredients for Osage? I mean, is it good for the face as well or just a fun freezer? Any good skin healing properties in the stuff?

Ok...update to this...here's what I found on the net...

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Alcohol SD-40, Menthol, Fragrance (Parfum), Eucalyptol, Blue 1, Yellow 5

So that said, what does everyone else use in conjunction with Osage? Anything?

Interestingly, my bottle has Spanish ingredients and lists glycerine as well despite not being mentioned in the English!
