Best DE for under/around nose? (from EJ DE89)

New guy alert!

Just started down the DE path with an EJ DE89L. I really like the razor, though I am still getting used to the DE after years and years (and, let's face it, years) of cartridge torture. I am not slicing my face up like I was afraid I might, so that's good news!

The problem I am having is that I can't seem to get up close under and next to my nose. It seems like the head on the EJ is bigger than it perhaps needs to be and this is getting in the way? Are there good alternatives with slimmer heads? I could do with something perhaps slightly more aggressive, as well.

Thanks, folks!
Dave

I do not have an EJ but it seems to be quite similar to the head of my Lord L6 which is a bit clunky under the nostrils.

A Tech works very well for me.

I think that successfully shaving those hairs close to the underside of your nose has as much to do with the anatomy of one's nose as it does one's razor. Stick with your EJ DE89 but change your approach. I use the EJ DE89 as well and can't get to to those hairs close under the nose when shaving from north to south. (i.e. with the grain) I tackle those hairs when shaving from west to east and east to west from the center of my nose. (i.e. across the grain) I'm able to get the edge of the blade right up against the nostil and I perform very short strokes to get them all. Anything that might be left over (which is little or nothing) is then taken care of shaving from south to north. (i.e. against the grain)

Thanks for the input, guys. I agree that I can use more practice, but the allure of a "new" razor is also strong. :)

Appreciated!

Those cheap modern tech clones from china have such thin metal making up the head it is remarkably good for that.

I would agree that a Tech would be a good choice. If you want something a little newer and perhaps more premium than an old Tech, you should go with a Goodfella. They have the lowest profile head I've seen. I have both a Tech and a Goodfella and I definitely prefer the Goodfella over the Tech for the weight and balance. Having said that, I'm glad that I have been able to get into the nooks and crannies with my Slim Adustable, because it is by far my favourite razor to shave with.

If you want to try out the Goodfella, I can happily post it to you. I can do the same for the Tech, but with them selling as cheap as they do, it's hardly worth the trouble to post it.

Cheers,
Rob

I started with an EJ DE89, but I'm getting much better results above the upper lip / below the nose with my Slim. Nicely balanced razor, too.

I agree with OP EJ89 is one of the best smoothest and comfortable shaves on the Market for most DE 89 users.

Then on Sunday i tried the Merkur Slant 39c Long Barber Pole handle, i must say it was like.shaving with and EJ89 on Steriods, Just as smooth but more efficent i swear i thought i was shaving with a EJ 89 i had to look at that Slant to believe it.

I was always let to believe that a Slant was agressive, but after using it i know its not so. I have sensative skin that irritates easy so i dont like agressive razors, if i do use an agressive razor i cold water shave and it helps alot with irritation and nicks.

Guys if you love your EJ 89 your going to Love the Merkur Slant 39c im now a big fan of this Razor because i to love the EJ 89 and the slant shaves just like it.

Thanks for the additional info. Rob, thank you VERY much for the generous offer! That won't be necessary, but I do appreciate it!

I am keeping at it with the DE89 and am having better success. I am sure I will pick up another razor or twelve down the line, but right now I think it's more technique than anything else for me.

The Tech recommendation already made by several is a good one. Best for me have been Gillette News (no interest in injectors), but I took a while (maybe 4 months) working up to OC DEs. FWIW, I've probably shaved with close to a dozen different News, and while there hasn't been great variance among them in terms of exposure attributible to head geometry, there are definitely noticeable differences. I have a stand-out favorite that I've used 29 out of 30 days over the past several months. I'm looking for a twin, but haven't found it yet.
