Use Ivory exactly the same way as a shave stick. It's not sexy but it works. Good cushion and plenty slick.

That is what I use! Perhaps I got lucky! Dont much care for the smell though, but it seems to work pretty darn good with my Gillettte Sensor cartridge. As you say, plenty of slick and cushion.

Before finding this poll thread, I posted a review of Grandpa's Pine Tar Soap as a shaving soap. Verdict: unsatisfactory in that usage. I have not tried any of the other body bar soaps for shaving and probably won't be doing so any time soon based on my experience with the pine tar soap. So, no vote for me since I don't know of any that would qualify as "best" in this category.

Don't knock the Ivory without trying it. I followed directions from a 100 year old Ivory advertisement. It was out of pure curiosity, but it was a very successful test.

Costco soap is pretty good soap as it actually has glycerine in it's ingredients. Unfortunately it was only good at taking the funk out of the badger brush.

I say try some face lathering with a bar of Lava. Highly exfoliating - enough so that you might not have to shave!

I used Irish spring and a Mach 3 to shave my face and head for years. Besides a little irritation on the neck it worked well.

I don't understand the advantage of shaving with a body soap, I'm afraid. Why would you do this? Economical reasons? You can buy decent shaving soaps for a dollar or two.

Just my two cents (which I'd be happy to donate towards a stick of Euro Palmolive, if that helps).

I've shaved with Yardley English Lavander and I found that it made nice slick lather but it didn't last even enough for one shave.
I'd much rather shave with shave soap, but obviously it is possible to shave with bar soap.

Dove picks up 2 votes.

Oil of Olay and Yardley pick up a vote under Other.

Coast, Dial, Lava, Lever 2000, Zest are still showing no love.

Irish Spring picks up a vote or 2.

None nearly tied with Ivory for the lead.

Lava has one spoof vote.

Tone (which in my mind is similar to Dove) still at zilch.

I haven't used Lava bar soap in 25 years (I now use Goop hand soap after working on the car) but if it is still the same I wouldn't want it anywhere near my face! That stuff is abrasive enough to take skin off of your hands with all the pumice crumbs in it! I would bet I could use it in place of 40 grit sandpaper to start smoothing a woodworking project it is so rough!
