Best Boar?

I know badger brushes are the most popular and generally regarded as the best brushes, but which is the best out of the boar brushes? My C&E EJ Super Badger is super soft and I was thinking of a boar for use for soaps. Since it seems boars are generally much cheaper than badgers, might as well go for the best.

I don't know that there is a best boar brush, the Omega's are very highly regarded in particular the 31064, Leon (vintagescent.com) has some Semogue boar brushes that have been getting very good reviews, and Vulfix has at least 1 entry that is also rated a good performer.

I have a Van Der Hagen brush that I don't think too much of at all, it rarely sees action but when it does it is constantly losing hairs and not very full, I have been using Badgers the past few years but recently bought 2 Omega's the 31064 and the smaller 81052 so far no hair loss at all and they are appear awesome with soaps, seem to have enough firmness and are soft enough but I have only had them a week so far but that is the first impression anyhow. I know they won't be replacing my Badgers for creams but maybe one of these boar brushes will get MWF to work.

Let the fights begin!

I really doubt there will be any true winner. I use an Omega 30005 and have been very pleased with the brush. I've also used a VDH boar that had a big twist in the knot that I didn't care for at all.

Fighting over which is the best boar brush?

Another sure sign of the coming Apocalypse!:w00t:

(I've only tried the VDH, and I liked it)

The only boar I have is the VDH and it's horrible. I don't know how many times I've used it, but it sheds hair like it's still alive. It sheds hair while I'm making lather, while I'm applying lather, and while I'm cleaning it off. I figured they couldn't all be this bad. So far I'm gathering that Omegas and Semogues are the top choices so far.

I've have Omega 31064 and it's pretty good brush. It's very soft but a little too lofty for my everyday use of soap. I use it mostly for creams. I used a new Boreal 976 this morning for the first time (test lathered last night) and I'm already very impressed. It's very very stiff but soft. Not as scratchy as the VDH but way stiffer. For about $20 it's a winner.

That's right, I ask the questions noone else dares to ask.

Ok, I ask the questions noone else is dumb enough to care about.

But seeing as how I would like a good boar for soaps I figured it was worth asking. Thanks for the responses.

Go to your local CVS/Walgreens/whatever.

Find the VDH brushes (located next to the Williams soap...). Open a few boxes and take a look at which one seems to be in best condition.

Then buy it.

I've got a Semogue 1305 and it's been an excellent brush so far. The bristles are soft, but have a nice stiff backbone to them to get some really excellent lathering going. It's still breaking in, but gets a good lather going that continues to get better with each use. I've ordered the Semogue 2000 to compliment it. I highly recommend it. The price is excellent as well, which is an added bonus.

The VDH is the one I have now and mines horrible. It sheds like crazy. It looked fine when I bought it, but as soon as I started lathering with it out came the hairs. I don't think I woule be able to tell a good one from a bad one without trying to use them. It works fine otherwise, but the shedding is really excessive.

I don't have any recommendation boar brush wise, but I see that you have a Tweezerman brush. Don't you find that works well with soaps?

this line had me rolling on the floor:laugh:

I have the VDH as well. mine lost a few hairs early but seems OK now. I'm planning to get an Omega in the near future. Probably one of the $9-12 10064's just to see what they're all about.

The Omega 49 for $11 shipped from West Coast Shaving is outstanding price/performance.

Lathers soaps easily and holds lather well. Firm backbone but bristles soften up nicely after a few shaves. IMO a great brush to test boars as opposed to VDH.

I have a C&E made by EJ Best Badger, and an Omega 48. I love the firm scratchiness of the C&E, but I use the Omega almost daily. I use it for everything, but it makes mountains of lather with MWF. Nothing else like it. Plenty of backbone, and incredibly soft on the face.

It works well, but I found the VDH worked better with soaps with the exception of shedding so much. I figured I would look at a better boar option. I was also considering giving the Tweezerman to a friend to get him into wetshaving.
