Before Pics of my W&B

So this my first vintage razor cost 97$ all in so not bad IMHO and here as promised is the before pics of it (these are sellers pics) I will complete this thread when it is in my hands as a finished product!!! I do think this razor may need rescaling and I am thinking about having neil miller at strop shop rescale it in ebony? what do you guys think does it need it and would ebony be a good choice? Also would having the smile honed out be a good idea?

Regards Grant

don't have the smile honed out... it makes the shave smoother. it adds a natural slicing action where a perfectly straight bevel lends itself to chopping/mowing.

There are razors that are created with a smile and there are razors that have been poorly honed and end up smiling or frowning. This is defiantly Meant to smile :)

Thanks for the advice guys but when I hone the razor will the smile make it much more difficult to hone? Also any opinions on the scales would be Great

Regards Grant

I really like the traditional look of the older scales. Nice, smooth, rounded lines. With a vintage W&B I'd look to something more subtle like a horn or gray translucent horn. That's just my opinion.

That one looks really good as is.
If it was my razor, I'd just polish the handles & the blade.
But that's me.

Congratulations anyway

I really like the look of old horn scales. I try to save them whenever possible. You can fill the bug-bites in with some epoxy. A little sanding, polishing and some neatsfoot oil should make them look great. The blade looks pretty good too. Maybe some high grit sanding and polishing. Very nice razor.

Thanks for telling me that the scales are salvageable I will try and get them looking presentable. I'm also glad to know that this is a nice razor as I worried it was a *** especially next to the "other one" up just now i.e this

I'm a sucker for old Sheffield blades but I'd say that's a great razor. I'd guess made in the mid-1800s or so which means it was most likely forged, ground and finished by hand. It's over 150 years old so it's shaved a few faces in it's time and it shows its age a little. Nothing wrong with that. With a little TLC your grandchildren could use it someday. :thumbup1:

Great to know! Thanks

Nice!

I have something for horn but it might be me...

That's a huge chopper, is that a wedge?

ROFLMAO:lol::lol::lol: I don't know if that's a double entendre in the U.S.A and Austrailia aswell but half a Cadbury's chocolate finger that I was eating shot out my nose when i read that. I feel a custom title coming for you...

I think it is a near wedge or a wedge AFAIK it is a Wade and Butcher 17/16ths wedge grind chopper so yes it is effing massive. It is as far as I can gather old I don't think it was even made up until 1890.

I can post some pictures of my W&B with horn scales later...

Yeah it was pretty funny intended or no. I would love to see pics of your W&B as I think they're just awesome looking razors, they make smaller thinner ground razors look like toys!!!

All the best Grant

I believe those are two different style razors. The "other one" is a Celebrated Hollow Ground For Barbers Use and is etched on the blade. Yours has the Barbers Use indication on the tang but nothing on the blade. Small difference, but i have seen both before and both are very nice. One of these days I'll go after a nice W&B to restore.

Yes one is the "celebrated" wade and Butcher and mine is just a vast chopper for barbers use. I think that the celebrated hollow ground razor is newer although I am unsure about this.

Here we go, here's mine with Horn scales.

Restoration done by Oz in Oz!

I will take more pictures another day, I don't have the proper light at the moment, the razor looks much better when you hold it!

SubmarinerLV,

Mr Neil Millers ebony scales (and his pinning work) are superb:001_smile

I have some on my 5/8 Kropp, and have quite a few other razors that are going to him for re-scales !

A set of ebony scales in a classic British shape will complement your razor perfectly !

Have fun !

Best regards

Russ
