Bargain Hunting in Aus

While I am waiting for the slow boat from China to arrive with my goodies I thought I would have a look around the thrift/goodwill type of store here in OZ.
What a disappointment.
The standard answers are either we throw all of that stuff out because no one wants it or got to throw it away because of health regs.
So all you avid collectors don't come down here looking for collectibles because you wont get them in Cairns.

You'd be surprised. A lot of members of the Great southern Land (GSL) group do quite well at bargain hunting around boot sales and antique shops. It is slim pickings though.

I've gotten a couple of things in antique stores (for big money) but I have NEVER found any shaving stuff (except one old spice mug) in a thrift store here. And I haunt them regularly. I'm sure people are getting rid of the stuff, but I have a feeling that the people who work at the shops have realised that they are collectible, so they do not make it to the shelves.

Ah, you should join the Canberra sub group. They meet every second Thursday at Gungahlin Aldi.

I would send a post to Jim (same username) and see if he can do anything. I believe it was put into place to try and stop people spamming the sub-forums, but I could be wrong.

Alternatively you could just keep posting in this thread (or get a long introductory thread going)

Maybe while they are all at the Gungahlin Aldi I can clean out the antique shops.

Actually, on the complete other end of town, I found a nice British made Gillette Tech with Al handle, and a couple of nice looking Rolls Razors. I didn't buy the Rolls, but later my curiosity got the better of me and I bought one on the bay. That and a 1912 Ever Ready.

I've done OK out of antique stores but no luck with thrift shops. I always pop in for a quick look when I go past one though.
