So after my Sweeney Todd experience at T&F (Terrible and Futile?) in London, I thought I'd give another try for a straight shave by a qualified barber. Since I trounced my experience at T&F, I thought it only fair to give proper brag about the quality of this past weekend. I was in Las Vegas for a buddy's bachelor party...and yes you know the shaving bug has you when rather than joining the guys for golf, you look forward to heading to the barber to get a shave. Actually, I booked a massage, followed by a shave at the Barber Salon located in the Canyon Ranch Spa in the Venetian hotel. Spent a good deal of type relaxing, and somehow I think a few trips to the steam room counts as a good start to a solid beard prep. On to the important stuff. The barber, Peter, sat me down in the chair and began the prep routine. Now I'm not sure I have this exactly right but I believe the shave went as follows: Hot towel, facial massage with Gentlemens Refinery pre-shave oil, hot towel, more pre-shave oil, warm TGR standard scent lather, wtg pass (in very precise, short strokes with a Feather shavette w/feather blade), hot towel, oil, warm lather, various angled XTG pass with great detail and changes in direction with every stroke it seemed, hot towel, warm lather, ATG pass, hot towel, warm lather, touch up, wipe off w/ hot towel, cool towel, iced towel, cool facial mask (more of a non-caking cooling gel then a clay mask), finally TGR aftershave balm and TGR moisturizer when the balm was dried. Also in the process I had my the hair around my ears trimmed (maybe the hair in my ears as well), nose hair trimmed and after all of the above, a hot lather and straight razor shave of my neck. I may have mixed a few steps up, and it's a bit of a ramble but it was a hell of a process, enjoyable each and every step of the way. Renewed my belief that even with "sensitive" skin, you can truly enjoy a traditional straight shave from a talented barber. I've tried the TGR products at home and happen to love their Aftershave balm. It was in fact the reason I chose this salon to try as I found it through the link on TGR's website after ordering samples of their product. BBS shave; comfortable, pampered skin; relaxed state of mind; and a group of friends left very jealous that they hit the links rather than the spa with me. Maybe others in Vegas are as good, but if you want to splurge and treat yourself (it's pricey) I'd go see Peter and put your face in his hands for an hour.
