Badger and boar combination brushes.

I have seen a couple of boar/badger combination brushes advertised. I think one is by Vulfix. I believe Omega used to make one. Has anyone here used a combination brush and what kind of results did you get?

I've used the vintage ones (Cased) where the badger surrounds a core of boar. I was not impressed. It seems to be about the same as a boar brush would be of the same quality... but less dense because the badger does nothing but trap a little water. I use it to create and apply lather for a few hones I use with lather.

I have several, two vintage ones ("cased" - a tiny EverReady travel brush, and an Erskine K-250), and a Vulfix 404 boar+badger.

I favor a boar brush, and these all behave more like boar than badger, and feel "scrubby" on the face. I think the badger was included for appearance (it helps the brush keep its symmetry, and has the banded color) and to make them more "upscale".

I like them all. I have been using the 404 a lot. It is a good value, if you are looking for a new brush.

I have had the K-250 "forever", and it is still a favorite.

I have two identical combo brushes from Caswell-Massey (they were in gift baskets from my sons). The older one (it is five years old) works fine but the newer one (3 years old) was shedding until just recently.

They are not my favorite brushes - a little stiff. But, they make a decent lather and do a nice job on soap. They don't hold as much lather as my silvertip and other badger brush, however.

The Vulfix 404 Grosvenor is a great brush, I used mine this morning. It has lots of backbone which was great for working the MWF that I was using, yet it holds enough lather for multiple passes. As said above, they are somewhat of a bargain.

I have two mixed-brushes; the Vulfix 10 (the 404's cheap and small brother) and the Wilkinson. They do their job and are easy to use on either soaps and creams. That would make them ok as a starter brush. The Vulfix is 5 steps up from the Wilkinson. Not that the Wilkie is bad, I think it is better than both their badger and boar brush, but it is more of a cheap drugstore brush.

I prefer boars in general but like the mixed brushes probably more than full badgers. There is just one real issue with the mixed brushes and that is the low quality badger that is used; sometimes even trimmed. Still they perform good and they deserve their place amongst the rest of the brushes. At their price point I would recommend anybody to try one.

Great brush for the price - good at everything and well built with a nice handle to boot.
