backup for Merkur Futur, any suggestions?

Wow! I have been here almost 1 year. Thanks to all for the fellowship and great advice.

I have been using a Merkur Futur as my only DE for some time now. I really like the blade, including the weight, the balance, the adjustibility and the audible feedback. Now I am looking for a backup DE with the same qualities. I thought about getting a second Futur but thought that before I do that I would ask you all if there is another similar blade that might tempt me. I want the same characteristics as the Futur. So if you have any suggestions, I would appreciate it.

I'd suggest, if adjustable, a Merkur Progress. If you're thinking non-adjustable, then definately the HD. I use both of these in my rotation and think very highly of them. Of course there's always the Merkur Vision... I've never tried it but I'm sure there's quite a few on here that have.

Good luck,

I think all Merkur users need a HD. I have a barberpole slant as well. Had a progress but traded for the slant and glad I did. I do love my futur but lately have been hooked on my HD:thumbup1::thumbup1:

+1... it's been my go-to for the past 2 weeks, which is rare cuz I get bored easily. It shaves so well that I can't put it down!

I don't think of the Vision as a backup razor because they seem to be in the shop a lot.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I have had a fat boy and liked it except that the mechanism was a bit loose. I think that I will try a vision, found one for a good price. Sorry to hear that they are in the shop a lot. Will keep looking for others as well.

After about a decade and a half of trying different DE's (RAD),
I would just buy another Futur and tuck it away. Nothing else works better.
Although the E. Jaggers are definitely prettier.
Now I spend my shaving time and money on straight razor shaving. I keep hoping that one day, I may be able to come close to the shave that the Futur gives merrily gives to me.

I back up my Futur with a slant for the days when I have excessive growth, (1 or 3 days worth). I've always heard your second razor should be a slant. :001_smile

+1 ... through some BST deals, I wound up with 2 Futurs in my rotation ... I keep one of them (with a fitted leather pouch) packed ready for travel. The other one gets played about 3 ~ 4 times a month at home, most recently with an Iridium blade set on 4.5

Well I have been str8 shaving since end of December. I shave with the str8 5-6x a week. I still can not get the same shave as with the DE. I really like the str8 shaving endeavor but since the shaves from my Futur are superior I am leaning towards DEs as my primary method. I am a bit disappointed in myself and my conquest of the str8, but that being said, many here would suggest, and have, going with what works.

A backup for a Futur?! Another Futur!

Although I have Progress and an HD to keep my Futur company. I spin a giant wheel and let fate choose my razor for the day. For travelling I use take my HD. If I had to pick a different razor though to back up a Futur, probably a long handle Progress or 38C (long handle HD). The weight will be similar. I haven't tried a Vision yet, but haven't really read anything that makes me want to try one either.

I am still learning straights on the weekends :blushing:
