What's new

Back to square one with SWMBO

Well, the huge thumbs up for Ogallala Bay Rum Special Reserve by SWMBO has turned into "You're wearing cloves - that reminds me of when your sister stayed with us and smoked her clove cigarettes in the guest bedroom against our wishes." :frown:

Sooooo, now I've got a huge bottle of the stuff inbound and no way to use it. Serves me right for buying it before a longer test period.

She still likes citrus-based scents, so I'm going to have to explore that some more, but I don't know which direction to turn. Any suggestions?

Any Bay Rum has to come to me.

If she likes citrus-based, call John and change your order to the Limes and Peppercorn.

In all seriousness, why don't you try Pinaud's Citrus Musk while you're looking around? It doesn't last terribly long, but it has a pleasant citrus scent that dries down to a kind of clean laundry fragrance. The price is right and it will tide you over until you find something you really like. Beene's now-discontinued Bowling Green is also nice. Reasonably priced and easy to find. Also comes with a matching aftershave splash.

Go for Guerlain Habit Rouge! Soft, citrusy scent of sorts. I kind of like it. But you would be getting out of the barbershop zone. Having said that, I remember that you have Jicky! Good luck, John (Blew it! Nid has the Jicky)

How citrus does she like? At Bath and Body Works they have a Lemon fragrance by C.O. Bigelow. It's about $35 for 100mL. Smells just like a darn lemon peel. Personally, I like it. In fact, I think they have some coupons going on right now as well. I don't know how much more citrus you could get from lemon peels unless you doused yourself down with Orange Glo furniture cleaner. Hey, that's not a bad idea....

I have to echo both the Limes and Peppercorns (my personal favorite Bay Rum) and the Pinaud Citrus Musk. Both are great scents.

It's probably not citrus-y enough for you, but I really like Drakkar. I typically pick up the lavender and sandalwood notes with the citrus layered just underneath those.

As I recall we're ducking sandalwood, so here's my batch....

Chanel Pour Monsieur Concentree (Classic/Lighter/Barebershop-ish)

Top notes are petit grain, lavender and mandarin orange; middle notes are nutmeg and cardamom; base notes are opoponax, vanilla, oakmoss and vetiver.

Chanel Anteus (MANLY. Arrrggggh)

The top notes include lemon, lime, coriander, myrtle, clary sage, and bergamot. The heart is composed of thyme, basil, rose and jasmine, while the base of patchouli, castoreum, labdanum, and oak moss.

Geurlain Vetiver (Versatile/Classic/Conservative)

The top notes are bergamot, coriander, lemon, mandarin, and neroli; the heart unites vetiver and cedar wood; the base is composed of tobacco, walnuts, pepper, and Tonka bean.

Le Labo Rose 31 (Sexy/Dirty)

Top notes are rose and caraway; middle notes are rose, vetiver and cedar; base notes are amber, musk, coconut and guaiac wood.

Guerlain Habit Rouge (Classic Oriental- TRY FIRST!)

The composition is based on the harmony of fresh and intense citruses in the top (lime, orange and bergamot) and warm oriental balsamic notes in the base. The smoky and leathery nuances in the final notes are contrasting with the juicy beginning. The sophisticated heart is composed of flowers, precious woods with a warm touch of cinnamon.

Domenico Caraceni 1913 (DA BOMB! Masculine to max with rose)

Top notes are neroli and styrax; middle notes are geranium and rose; base notes are tobacco, incense and cypress.

I recommend:

L'Occitane Vetyver
Body Shop Kistna (although check out Arber if you go to a shop)
Trumper GFT or maybe Astor

I also like Kenneth Cole Black, and Geoffrey Beane's Eau de Grey Flannel (sandalwood, sheer musk, soft woods and vetiver according to basenotes.net) is a favorite of mine. These aren't citrus-based, but My gf likes both of them on me. They're easy to find and test at a department store, too. Since your other initially liked bay rum, maybe she would like something with sandalwood in it.

Mandom!

I had the same thing happening to me for the Kriek cherry beer. I loved those cherries and then SWMBO said "It taste like cough medicine...." Now I taste cough syrup... That's awful!
