What's new

awww man

I just got through de pinning a razor in a pair of makeshift wooden scales a la side cutters and was starting to polish it when I realized it was warped. Warped in a weird way. It's almost like it's been ground asymmetrically. The weird thing is it almost (but not quite) makes even contact with a flat and level surface. It should make for an interesting blade for me to hone, and it will be nice to cut my teeth on it, but dang I wanted this to become a daily workhorse :frown:.

If I had known it was warped, I would have left it in the scales and tossed it up on the bay and sold it as "art deco." Let a "collector" think he got a bargain piece and leave it at that. But then I would have been honest and said it was warped.

Maybe this is my fault for letting it hit the concrete floor of the basement when my fingers slipped (but no cracks...). Is this seven razors worth of bad luck?

Why did you use side cutters? Were the scales damaged beyond repair? Thats the only time I ever did that.

All other times I either left the razor in the scales or attempted to depin. You can even grind off the top of the pin using a file. Gsixgun has a tutorial on how to do it. Not really any excuses to destroying scales rather than attempting a depin. Now, destroying them in the attempt to depin otoh....I've done that 4 times now. The last time was actually yesterday when I got lazy and stopped cutting off the pin before it was truly cut off. Paid for it pretty dearly. Destroyed a nice pair of horn scales. :( :( Very sad. Lesson to you all, chop off the entire pin or else a little nub will rub catch and cause the scales to break.

As for you....yes. 7 razors bad luck for destroying the scales needlessly. ;)

Oh I didn't actually trash the scales with the side cutters. I had more damage from my first attempt - using a power drill. They are still servicable, but in order to make them match I would have to re pin both pins so they matched.

I'm not sure I won't be able to put an edge on this blade any ways, so I'm not sure it really matters. The scales were kind of ugly, I needed to remedy that.
