Audible feedback

I am fascinated by audible feedback. I can hear the blade in my Gillette Aristocrat cutting through the whiskers. It adds a lot to the whole experience, although I'm not sure why. I never noticed any audible feedback with a Mach3. Why is that?

There are a number of razors that have good acoustics, most notably the GEM SE razors.

With a couple of days beard, you'll hear the 'scritchy' sound that sounds like you're buttering/scraping a piece of dark toast. I'll also say that after a couple of years of wet-shaving, it becomes a background noise that you won't even notice.

I love the audible feedback I get from a Futur. It's one of the reasons I acquired a second, after foolishly letting go of my first.

Funny. I always noticed the audible feedback with my Mach3. I have noticed, however, that each razor has its own "tone."

I purchaes a Lutz slant which had a hollow handle. The first time I used it I noticed quite a bit of high pitched audible feed back. Since I prefer a heavy handle I added some weight to the handle by adding #4 shot. The next time I shaved I noticed less feedback at a lower pitch. It would appear that the added weight muffled the sound.

I really like the sound of shaving with a DE or straight. With DEs, the audible feedback also tells me when my angle is correct (I listen for a "good cutting sound" if that makes sense).

The sound surprised me when I did my first shave with a DE. I had a little scratching noise with my Mach3, but it was much louder with my Merkur. It also tipped me off to the fact that I had just found the right angle for the razor.

For some reason, I feel like the sound is present in tv/movie when someone is shaving. I wonder if they just have a sound clip of someone from the 30s shaving and they use it whenever. Haha

I like the sound of a DE razor in the morning.

Perhaps it is not that it is louder per say, maybe it is just that we are paying more attention to the act of shaving that we are able to hear it easier.

I think this is part of the equation. As is the construction of the razor and the particular blade. I found shaving today with a Treet Platinum SS more "audible" than with a Gillette Nacet Stainless. Both with a Gillette Slim adjustable.
