I wasn't going to bother posting this but I've been liking my French razors lately.
This Aubril had some really deep pitting so I didn't want to go too hard on it.
180 WD (lightly) then 320 and 400
The scales are bone.
Again, on a vintage French razor, the pin holes were 1.5mm so I had to drill to 1.6mm
Cleaned up any markings on the scales and gave the razor a brushed metal finish which looks better than mirror on a pitted blade.
Put back on the original collars which appear to be copper which seems unusual on a razor. They really wanted to fly off during peening.
While it's never going to be a looker what surprised me was the shave quality. The blade is substantial enough to be silent and wonder if it's cutting.
The bevel set was easy for this heavily smiling blade and I only went to 3 & 1 micron on film after that.
It was more just to test it but the 1 micron finish on this "soft" steel blade outperforms some of my high end razors in terms of comfort.
I spent so little time honing it I wasn't expecting it to shave well at all and it was more to determine what needed to be done.
This will eventually get a coticule edge to stick with the French/Belgium theme but if you ever see one of these in the wild grab it!
Bevel angle is bang on 18 degrees at 3 points along the blade as it smiles
