Attracting New Fountain Pen Users with Pilot Metropolitan

Part of what I do as a physician is teach medical students, interns and residents.* While I've often been asked about my fountain pens, the cost of the pens has always dampened their interest in them. Last month, I picked up a Metroploitan, and have been using it regularly. In the past week, after finding out that they cost less than $15, two residents have purchased one from Amazon. Two of my children have picked them up as well. That makes four new fountain pen users in less than a month. In over twenty years of routinely using them, these are the first converts that I know of. I'm happy to see that others find this pen as appealing and well made as I do. It is an excellent pen for the money.

*It is something I find particularly rewarding. At Ohio State, they repeatedly stressed how important it was for physicians to teach as well as practice medicine. As the first talk of day one of medical school, Woody Hayes addressed our entire class. He gave his "Pay Forward" speech, where he stressed our obligation to help others as payment for all those who had given to us through the years. It was the best talk I've ever been to, and as influential on me as anything I've heard. Woody may have had some self control issues on the field, but he was inspirational in person.

Hear, hear!

Great starter pens. Way to go on the encouragement!

The only thing that bothers me, just slightly, is the step on the grip near the end of the barrel where it rubs on my middle finger.

I'm going to buy a Pilot 78G for my boss ... let's see if I can convert him :001_smile

(He already uses quality notebooks, but always with felt tip pens)

Yep, the perfect price point to trap new members

The only way the Metropolitan could get any better would be to offer a fine nib (IMO)

Thanksgiving coincides with Hanukkah this year. Each of the kids coming to my home for turkey will go home with a Lamy Safari. I just ordered 6 pens yesterday. I'll let you know if we get any converts.

speak of the devil, guess what came in today straight from hong kong! I loaded up my Pilot 78g just now with the cartridge (I want to burn through them before using my Aurora Black) and its a joy to write with. Im loving this

+1

The Metro was my gateway drug...err fountain pen. I successfully converted one person to FPs with a Metro. And then converted him to wet shaving. My other FP convert was with a Lamy Safari.

I was amazed when i accidentally caught a video on youtube on the making of pilot pens.
it boggled my mind- the number of processes involved in the making of these very small parts.
My eyes popped when i saw how they electric welded the tip to the nib...

The pilot was my wife's intro pen. I likes it so much I bought one for myself and one for a good friend.

Fridays are Fishtastic!
Between my Pilot Metro and the 78g on the way, I'm hooked. I'm about to buy a Mondeverde Artista Crystal, a Noddler Ahab, and The 2012 Franklin Christoph B&B SE. I'm in trouble and I'm having way too much fun with it

I know some have had luck with Ahabs, and some haven't. To me it was the most frustrating pen in the world. Not trying to put you off, but just be aware that you might have to fiddle with it forever.

I like my Noodler's pen, but it didn't write well out of the box. It took a couple hours of fiddling with it, but it's been fine since then.

You are one of the lucky ones. I fiddled with both of mine, they were good for a day. Next day, repeat. And so on, and so on. They frustrated the hell out of me, because they were such good looking pens.

I've purchased 3 Metropolitans over the last 6 weeks, and 1 of them apparently had a bad nib. I did a fair amount of online research and learned that this is disappointingly common. The nib did not "taper" correctly to a point. I think that I finally fixed it today, but it was frustrating. I don't understand why the Pilot design team hasn't addressed this issue, since the pens otherwise are fantastic and the Pilot Varsity nib (a disposable) is flawless.

Agree with you on the Varsity! I was very impressed with its quality and a little disappointed that it wasn't refillable.
The BIC disposable is also a nice pen.
