Atg

three-tu-tu, three-tu-tu
I can't go ATG on my upper lip. I usually go WTG, WTG and then buff ATG and get pretty good results.

I haven't had a weeper in a couple of weeks so today I decided my technique was up to ATG on the old upper lip.

I can't go ATG on my upper lip. A plethora of weepers! BBS - but what a price. That was hours ago and I'm still suffering. Never again.

What kind of razor are you using?

I've always shaved ATG on my upper lip. I find it easiest with a SE or a Schick injector. I think that it becomes easier the more you do it. You also have to stretch the skin by opening your mouth as if you're yawning.

That upper-lip/below-the-nose work is very tricky business. Only downward WTG passes for me no matter the result. I admit it...I'll often use a Schick Hydro 3 for those touch-ups if I was really sloppy. I know...sacrilege...but honest.

I've found that actually not stretching the skin, using my tongue to push out, or making the "O mouth" helps for me. All I do is keep my mouth shut and relaxed then use a steep angle. As long as I'm using the right blade...it goes through like buTTah!

Actually I do use my tongue for hitting the corners of the mouth, but upper lip is all relaxed when going ATG. Try it out...see if it helps!

It's a trouble spot for me aswell. Even though I vowed not to go ATG there once aswell I now get pretty decent results.

I do some carefull buffing at the shallowest effective angle and with my eyes closed. For some reason I shave better there when I relax and just shave on "feel" instead of looking concentrated into the mirror.

I can't either. I use a slant almost exclusively and it won't fit but I screw it up even with a tech. On my upper lip, the whiskers grow straight down. That's about the patch of skin where the whiskers all grow in the same direction so I have to shave down, across, across the other way, then up.
On the straight up pass, sometimes I'll go at a 45 degree up angle on each side of the upper lip but I usually do three passes and call it good.
To sum it up -- don't worry about it lol.

I agree that it's often easier to "feel" how the shave is, especially for the left side for me because my hand is usually blocking my vision then. Maybe this is why I think it's easier with a SE or injector because there is usually better tactile and audible feedback. I also found ATG pretty easy with the R41 for the same reason, I suppose.

I was also buffing on the upper lip going ATG to get a nice shave. Now howerver I've discovered that a gillette slide towards the 10 and 2 oclock positions really gets the majority of my whiskers in a way that buffing got me only with difficulty.

The best way that I've found to go ATG, is to use no pressure at all wherever I'm going ATG. I've also found that pressure is something that you need to work on. By that I mean that even when you might think that you're not using any pressure, you probably are. It took me quite some time to get the hang of just using the weight of the razor as the only pressure used, but after a good many tries, and lots of time, I got it down. Now I'm able to go ATG anywhere I shave, but there are times when I'll end up with some irritation which is related to pressure. Just keep working at it and you'll be able to use the ATG in time.

Me too.

The moustache area is very hard to get BBS imho. If I go ATG I get significant irritation. I just go XTG both ways, and it's enough.

I go WTG, XTG from the outside in and then do a 3/4 ATG with my razor at a 45 degree angle. This gives me a bloodless BBS.

There's 2 ways that I do it. The first is at a very steep angle with some pressure, but not much. The angle is so steep that the blade can't bite, but you're grabbing the whiskers and shaving them. I can only do it with a very slick soap like cade or mama bears.

The second is with a very shallow angle and NO PRESSURE. And by that I mean, no pressure. You should be slicing the hair cleanly at the very base of the hair at an almost perpendicular angle. The razor head should barely be touching your skin, sometimes it doesn't even touch.

Those are 2 techniques that I use, maybe they'll work for you. To go ATG you need REALLY good and slick lather. How I define slick is even if there's no actual lather on a given spot I can still shave it because it the lather behind some slickness.

I go ATG over my upper lip every day. When I was learning, I'd get weepers. Now I rarely get one. Part of this was learning the right razor to use. With a Slant I borrowed last week, it was a piece of cake. This week, tried it with an R41 -- this is not a good idea. But with my Futur or Fat Boy plus any decent blade, no problem.

I find it's important to stretch the skin, which I do by pulling my lip down. On the chin I have to be even more careful or the razor bounces and I get weepers. Here I stretch the skin by pulling the lower lip up as far as I can.
