ATG always and anyway? What are your opinions?

Do you mean every pass? I do the first pass with-the-grain and that’s a much smoother shave.

But, yes, I always complete my shave against-the-grain. It’s necessary for a really close shave, which I want, and with the right equipment, pre-shave prep, and technique it doesn’t need to be harsh or damaging to the skin.

When I started shaving it was common for shaving companies to advise that you should never shave against-the-grain. But I didn’t care about their opinion and there are no cops in my bathroom to try and stop me from shaving the way I like. The shaving companies seem mostly to have shut up about this now, so I was right and they were wrong. And I think recent new razor designs are increasingly clamping the blade tightly to facilitate a better against-the-grain shave, since that’s what their customers expect and how they will judge the razor.

I always do ATG as the last step, for all my shaves
I agree with you Sir

For me ATG is tricky on my neck without causing some skin irritation. ATG is possible everywhere else with little chance of irritation. My first pass on my neck is south to north (for me, that's WTG). Second pass on the neck is mostly across the grain and that seems to be sufficient to get a close and comfortable shave. After taking care on the neck it's ATG everywhere else. With a less efficient razor (that is to say, a razor that's less efficient for me, due to my technique or whatever), I might need a cleanup pass.

For me yes I have gotten to the point of doing ATG on my final pass so its 1st pass WTG, 2nd pass WTG (as a touch up) with some XTG, DTG depending on the area then ATG since why am I shaving with a double edge, to get a nice BBS, which is one reason why I got into this to begin with. No other way to do it as others have stated in the thread.

I have sometimes done less ATG in certain spots to try to have no or very little irritation but that just depends on how my skin is and me. Whatever works for you, by all means do it. When I first started wetshaving I only did WTG as I was learning and my technique got better then I kept going up to where I can ATG comfortably without issues.

I totally agree with you Sir
Mine was a curiosity... I always do WTG and ATG

Do you always do ATG at the end of shaving or not?
I closely follow my shave map for face and head. My two pass shaves are locked wrist short quick ATG strokes. The only stroke I use. I worked into it from the traditional three pass WTG, XTG, ATG shave. In my case pre shave prep is critical and extensive to accomplish above average closeness. BBS+. I shave once a week and I believe the extra whisker length also aids with the stroke. I also use a light pre shave cube application between first and second pass of my two pass shaves. Shaves are extremely close and very comfortable. My post shave routine is also very extensive to nourish the closely shaved skin. In my case both pre and post skin care is critical for healthy comfortable skin.

No ATG for me. Haven't done it for years now. I used to go crazy trying to get BBS. Tried every trick and tool under the sun. I would get BBS but was never without consequences.

I would end up with irritation. My face looked raw and next day it was full of bumps and ingrowns to the point it was torture to shave again for at least a week.

Come to find out my whiskers grow so parallel to my skin that the ATG pass would also shave some skin off when the hair was raised and the root or follicle would also raise some skin.

Besides, my beard is so thick and coarse that a BBS result wouldn’t look any cleaner than a comfortable shave. I always have the 5 0’clock shadow.

So I gave up the ATG pass for good.

Shave in the morning and if I have an event or anything by the afternoon/evening to where I need to look freshly shaven then I just shave again. Is a lot more comfortable and my face looks healthy.
