AS balm vs AS lotion?

Ok I'm sure I couldfind the answer with a quick searh but I'm feeling really lazy. So whats the difference between AS balm and AS lotion. feel free to post a link to a thread that explains it.

Sorry for the laziness,

Mr. Monkey's point is well taken, but I know where you're coming from. A lot of times I feel too lazy to look, too. The conventional term "aftershave lotion" refers to an alcohol-based splash. It doesn't comport with what most people think of as lotions, but they still call it that; why I don't know. Conversely, an aftershave balm is what we would consider a lotion, which is to say thicker, creamier, and more moisturizing. So just remember, aftershave lotion = splash; aftershave balm = lotion. There. Was that so hard?

Laziness schmaziness. Let's face it, there are only a limited number of shaving-related questions that can be asked. If there was a "don't ask it if you can find the answer with a search" rule, there'd be tumbleweeds blowing through the shaving forums. What fun would that be (especially for those of us who didn't participate in, say, the first ASB v ASL thread, which I assume was posted in 2006)?

Excellent response! And you made it look so easy!

Ha! I've thought the same thing many times. Although I have often wondered what it would be like if we (or other shaving forums) limited posts only to what was new and relevant - e.g., this company reformulated that product, this brush maker has been bought out, two-band hair is available here, etc. It might make such information easier to find, since it wouldn't get lost in the shuffle. Then again, it might get so dull around here, since such posts would be so infrequent, nobody would check in to find out.

Thanks for the replies. It's also nice to ask in a forum instead of doing research as you can also get some opinion thrown into the mix.

Well, to add on, do you guys use an ASB or ASL, or both?

To add onto that, I just ordered myself a DE razor, brush, soap, cream, and some derby blades.

What ASL or ASB do you use?
What do you think of Nivea Cooling Balm, Proraso After-Shave, and Geo F. Trumper's Lime? Are they any good?

These topics have been covered substantially, and the combined responses would constitute the length of a book. In short, people here use both splashes and balms, depending on their personal preferences; some actually use both at one time. People here use as many different brands of aftershave as there are brands of aftershave. The ones you named are some of the more popular here.

Edit: I guess I could include what I actually use. Right now, my AS of choice is D.R. Harris Pink Aftershave. It is a low-alcohol splash, so I guess it would be considered a "lotion."

Directly after a shave, I use ASL. I have many. Before I go to bed, I usually apply some Nivea Sensative ASB.

I guess our terms are not in-line with the previous post but our products are not commercially made.

SCS aftershave 'Balm' is thick and needs to be in a plastic bottle due to this. It is recommended mainly for those with dryness.

Aftershave 'Cream; is thinner than balm; slightly thicker than a hand lotion; all skin types

Aftershave 'Milk' is even thinner than balm or cream, somewhat like Half n Half in it's consistancy; all skin types

Aftershave 'Splash' ... most of ours are a high SD alcohol content except Hydro which is low. They are as thin as water, splash in your hands, rub together and then into beard area. Most everyone with normal skin type can use them and also those with oily skin.

Each type contain differing ingredients and some differances within tye 'types'. Did this help or make it more confusing?

That's a pretty accurate overview of the aftershave types out there. I've seen some companies make their "Creams" thicker than their Balms, but otherwise, spot on.

I think a lot of confusion out there now comes from the fact that liquid splashes are still labeled as "lotions" even though public perception of what constitutes a "lotion" has gradually changed in the last couple of hundred years.

"I get a warm, romantic notion when you use Aqua Velva lotion."

There are also aftershave gels.

BTW, I agree that people should be able to ask questions without being told to look elsewhere before they ask the question here. We want people to use shave forums and be comfortable doing so.
