What's new

Are open combs supposed to be this mild?

I'm referring to my ikon oc 2013 model. I just love this razor. It takes off 2-3 days growth like nothing. I was under the impression they are very aggressive by nature. My R41 is on the other end of the spectrum. I find this razor to be less aggressive than my slant, witch I don't find to be aggressive. I've been using a gillette yellow in my oc and also feathers. Both blades work very well.Highly recommend this razor, can't wait for the slant to come out.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the iKon razor head is based on a Gillette NEW. I don't have the iKon, but I have two NEWs and I totally agree with your sentiments!

The iKon OC is based on the NEW Deluxe. Indeed it is a very efficient razor but doesn't feel aggressive. Can't remember who mentioned it but I also get a great shave from it with any blade I put into it.

I'm also waiting for the slant.

I find the OC to be moderate. The SB version was much more aggressive (too aggressive for me). The OC is slightly less aggressive than a New, IMHO; perhaps just a tad more so than the Webers.

Open Comb does not, by itself, imply an aggressive razor. Blade exposure (amount of blade past a line tangent to the cap and guard) and to a lesser degree blade gap, are the most important variables and those are independent of whether it's open comb or a safety bar.

My iKon OC is just right. I guess I could always shim it if I needed more aggression. But a nice super sharp blade like a Kai works great for a few days growth. Plus I have never seen any rust on it like they talk about with other SS razors. Guess I just live right.

I just purchased my first OC today. I ended up going for a Merkur 1904 OC. Never tried one before, all my DE have SB on them.
