Are actors shaved?

Everytime I watch somebody on TV or in the movies they always have a BBS shave and it is perfect. I realize much of it is probably editing, but surely somebody is shaving these people as they are just too perfect.

Does hollywood have professional shavers on set?

My guess it that there are some out there.

But, IMO, the big difference that makes them appear that way isn't shaving, it's makeup. And of course, modern editing techniques.

As someone who has worked in theatre and TV, I'll tell ya...

Makeup. Lots and lots of makeup.

Even modern TV and movie cameras need lots of light to render colours correctly. Lots of light, however, tends to wash out the colour and details of people's faces - these details have to be restored with makeup for a 'natural' look.

Also, studios and stages tend to be pretty warm, what with all the lights and extra bodies, so to avoid running sweat, actors are powdered frequently.

As he said make-up. Removing stubble in post would be a incredible waste of time unless it was part of aother effect as well

Then, of course, stubble has been quite fashionable since Don Johnson began sporting it with his linen suits and no socks.....

I'm thinking that the picture quality and definition may contribute to how people appear different from how they do in real life.

They have come a long way since the Nixon - Kennedy debates. Many thought Nixon lost because of his heavy beard.

+1. Not to mention hugely expensive. I work in post-production; we charge by the hour for retouching like that.

I suppose it's the makeup, but I noticed this too and it frustrates me. I guarantee almost all those actors don't spend the time we do trying to achieve that BBS look, but they're on screen immortalized with it and having, I suspect, little to no straight/safety razor skills!:tongue_sm

I also think it depends how much money you have... I would guess Hollywood big names have someone who does it for them. However, a lower grade actor might do it himself. Makeup is covering the result!

Certainly, some actors are into wet-shaving. John Travolta, for one.

But it's make-up that's making everybody look so clean-shaven.

I assume it must be makeup as well. What's really fun for all of us shave geeks is find an actor in a movie that has lots of razor burn. My latest find, in "Angels and Demons" Ewen McGreggor as heavy razor burn on his neck. Check it out!

Someone who does make up for actors please jump in. Anyone like that on the forum?

I've done makeup for community and local theaters. The actors shave themselves and most often are tasked with putting on the base makeup themselves. Then we stepped in and added out tricks to get the effects that we wanted on their faces. I'm sure that for long running productions it's the same way.

It may have been a fad, but I never thought of it as fashionable.

I wouldn't wear the D-J look, even in my cartridge/goo days. I'd sometimes go unshaven for several days, but I never wanted to make it look like I hadn't shaved when I had.

It's totally make-up. I have had such make-up applied to me. The photo I posted in the last page of the mugshot thread has me all stubbled up, but you can't see it. On my scalp you can.
