I'm researching scents for making shaving soap, and I wanted to see if anyone here had tried mixing essential oils, etc. to design their own fragrances, and to see if anyone had any tips / warnings.
I have found some help in the past at Basenotes, Fragrance DIY section http://www.basenotes.net/forums/15-Fragrance-DIY. My one attempt was a rose scented, witch hazel based aftershave splash. Have not tried soaps and do not know if anyone on Basenotes has tried soaps. But might be worth checking.
Done quite a bit of this but at best only a "Hack". Bassnotes web site is good. The main mistake I made at the start was blending too many things together, if you can start with just 3 EO's that can make things more simple and easy to adjust. Another tip I was slow to pick up on because I'm so impatient is to let them blend together for 3 weeks or so before you decide weather you like them or not. Give google a good workout too.
I have a cousin who lives in the South of France, there are several fragrance houses throughout Provence and many custom perfumers. She has come up with a couple of her own scents but it can get rather expensive. Using someone with experience is beneficial to coming up with a good combination. Something my wife and I look forward to if we make the trip.
