What's new

Anyone found any "gift sets" of note at department stores or other places?

Wondering if anyone has found any good "Christmas gift sets" at local department stores or other shops like Ulta, Body Shop, Wal-Mart, Target, etc.

Would love to find a cool little gift set (i.e bowl and soap, bowl and brush, etc.). If you've found something, share it with the rest of us--sometimes it is fun to pick up stuff locally!

The best time to shop for these kind of things is AFTER Xmas, when stores are scrambling to make their numbers for the end of the month, clear out old merchandise, and make room for new models. Although selection might be limited to stock on hand, what is there will be severely discounted.

These discounts may hold through the first week in January ... for example, last year, The Body Shop had their $40 Maca Root gift set on sale for half-price. When one member went to get one, he picked it up for a mere $10.
Same thing with L'Occitane, they had their $40 (synthetic) travel brush on sale for half-price, and they later reduced it to $10.

These bargains aren't just for personal care items ... whatever you want to buy, its best to wait. HDTVs, kitchen gear, clothing, cars, just about everything gets steeply discounted in the week between Xmas and New Year.

I know Mantic59 had a video on his blog that said some CVS's are carrying a store brand bowl, soap, and brush pack for $6.99. It looks to be a rebranded VDH set.
Here is a link: http://mantic59.blogspot.com/2010/10/video-inexpensive-introduction-to.html

I picked up a couple and ordered a couple of low end razors as gifts to co-workers that have always wanted to try wetshaving.
CVS is also the ONLY store I've found that carries the VdH DELUXE boar bristle brush ... its priced at about $7.49, with a white handle. It appears to be much denser than their NATURAL brush, the knot is more evenly packed and feels much softer even right out of the box.

My only complaint about it is that the handle is hollow and too lightweight, but various brushmeisters have assured me that this is easy to fix by drilling a hole and filling it with epoxy.

I haven't tried one yet, but if I needed a decent brush to put into a starter kit, that's a good choice.
