What's new

Anyone ever heard of this?

So while looking for Barbers that shaved with "real" shaving equipment and not a Mach 3, I stumbled across someone that used a DE, but could use a straight too.

Now she didn't use a DE with a Shavette, she used a DE in her hands, yes I have a million razors and she literally used her hands to shave people's faces, it was very good for touching up, although holding a DE looks very scary, although you would think twice about letting a lady shave you if you saw how good she was with it.

Not only did she use the DE to shave peoples' faces but she used it to put "designs" in the hair. I was really curious, and anyone that can use a DE in their hands seems wild to me, so I let her just put a design on my head. I guess I should have realized I may get an "urban" haircut too, so I am a little embarrassed of the picture, I also don't really know how to post one.

I'm curious though, of course people use Shavette's and a DE, but anyone seen a DE razor in their hand? Not even an SE, a Dorco ST-301!

Do you mean that she was holding a naked blade in her hand to do the shaving? That doesn't seem like a very good idea, a quick sneeze, movement, stumble could be disastrous.

I was wondering why she wasn't a surgeon....She has like 15 years+ experience doing that. She likes to be able to get more precise with the actual blade. As far as how smart it is, I don't know, I was grimacing at first. But after a while you see she knows what she's doing, she must have practiced A LOT.

Really??? I read and thought that it couldn't mean that. Weird to me but the OP say's it works.

I was in shock too, but I think if you saw her actually shave, you may change your mind. It was basically like using it in a shavette, she just wants more control over the blade.

I admit I saw her shave people, but I don't know how often she will do a real "shave" with the blade, I think mostly it is being used to style the hair. When you see people have lines or a star shaved into their head, this is what she does most. Fairly "urban" style.

When I did my first barber shave in Austin, the woman who did my shave was very skilled and explained she'd be happy to use a straight but if I didn't mind, she'd like to use a DE to touch up the neck area. I said fine and let me tell you, I was very smooth with very little if any irritation.

Interesting! Yeah she just completely used the DE the whole time, trust me I showed her the Shavette and an OC, and she had no interest. She had really steady hands (obviously) and never cuts herself or any patrons. Seeing as I saw her use about 5 blades while I was there, I would think if she wasn't very good at it or sneezed a lot, she wouldn't be using them still...

Shaving with a bare blade is more common in less-developed countries, youtube is full of Indian barbers going at it with a blade in their hand.

My buddies dad cant remember why. He either lost his razor, or broke it, or something else while in Vietnam. But he started shaving with just the blade while over there.

He uses a R41 now - but showed us how he did it - He folds it lengthwise to a 90 degree and then pinches it with his fingers and swipes away.

Is she hot?
I'm looking for a reason you would let someone use a bare DE razor to cut figures on your head.

I've heard of people using de blade like that. As long as they are experienced and theyre doing minor touch ups I think it's okay. Might as well get a straight razor though.

It wasn't that she was hot, I was more fascinated by how she could literally shave shapes in peoples' heads. I don't know if I'll have it done again, I will definitely get a less "urban" haircut, but I think the shaved shapes look funny, don't need to worry about getting fired for it, and it will go away in a few days most likely....
I saw her do it to other people too, I wasn't afraid of getting cut, I was kind of curious what it would be like though lol, and I wasn't really expecting the outcome, I usually get very conservative haircuts. But interesting nonetheless and I'll sport it for a bit lol. I got it more for fun than for anything else, I wasn't really trying to get this haircut, but I was pretty impressed by her skills at using the blade to shave off any hard to get hair and the extreme detail it allowed her to do.

Not saying it's the best thing to do, but I never saw it, hence why I was asking about it. Most places around here use a Mach3 to shave you, so just seeing a DE was interesting, but this just shocked me and I had no clue anyone did this.

I never knew it was common in 3rd world countries, I find it easier to use a Shavette or razor, but she insists on using the blade itself. I'm not 100% sure, but I think she can get better shapes done with it. And interesting how someone actually did it just because they lost their razor, I don't know if I'd have the guts to just start using the DE straight, I would beg for a Razor I think lol. But interesting stories, I didn't know it was so prevalent!

+1 ... I've seen at least one video like that. I just went looking for it, but couldn't find it.

I don't remember if the one I saw was from a barber in India, or whether it was a Muslim getting his head shaved for the Hajj to Mecca, but when I saw it the first time, it made me stop and notice "Wow ... he's holding that blade in his bare hands."

I haven't seen those either, but I almost got the silly design because I was also watching her shape and shave with the blade and was just in awe. I thought she was putting too much pressure and I honestly expected some irritation, I had low expectations and thought it was negative like most of the posters. However, without lying, it wasn't hydrated well, it wasn't done as well as I would shave my neck (not sure how my neck would do) but she shaved a lot of areas on my face/head and I had no irritation that I could tell. Even went home and shaved afterwards and everything was all fine. I was pretty shocked at how well she was able to do it, if she left nicks and irritation I wouldn't have been as impressed.

This is a post from yesterday. Is that what you mean. Looks scary. first I've seen of it but it kinda makes sense. No razor to get in the way so you can see exactly where the blade is. It would make getting in to those small places much easier. In the video it appears they use half the wrapper as a blade guard.

Thanks for that post! I missed it, I was getting my haircut then or looking in the mirror lol.

That is exactly what she was doing, she was doing people before me that were a little hairier, so I saw her use the DE on the eyebrow too. I was pretty shocked that she did not used the blade wrapper (Dorcos too, so no wax paper I don't think), but she seemed to know how to hold it without cutting herself, it wasn't like she held it carefully, you would think it was her scissors the way she picked it up.

Must have been trained similar, or learned similar techniques. That is basically the way she does it. I'm really shocked though, the one thing that differs with her is that she does not used any straight or Shavette with it, she prefers just the DE. She uses that or clippers, she doesn't use a Shavette etc.

What is also interesting is you would just think that looks harsh. But I watched her, she had no badger brush and so-so cream IMO, and I had no irritation. So not only did she do it well, but there was no crazy prep like we do for our faces, granted maybe a lot of areas around your face can take it, but I think it was more her technique. She shaved with it all around my forehead and I don't have any irritation, with some diluted crap cream. I was more just shocked at the skill that takes, I would agree with people that this can be done differently and probably safer, but that still can not be easy.
