Anyone been obsessive with a single shave?

I was wondering if anyone (and I'm sure they have) has spent an inordinate amount of time trying to see Just How Damn Close you can get? In all of my years of shaving I have never done this.

I put a red personna in the old Gillette 3 piece and did a standard 3 pass shave (WTG, XTG, ATG), stretching the skin like I would with a straight.

Then I went to work. Kids, don't try this at home.

I didn't do this on the tender area of the lower neck, for obvious irritation reasons.

I started going ATG where ever I could hear the scritch scritch scritch of the blade while stretching the skin good. Did short, quick strokes over a little area until I couldn't hear anything else then moved on to another patch. Did all of my face and chin like that...took 20 minutes or better just for that "touch-up".

The result: BBS anyway I run my fingers...WTG, XTG, ATG. Felt as smooth as running my fingers over my forehead...or smoother as my face is smoother than my old wrinkly forehead. :biggrin1:

This is definitely not an everyday routine, but it was fun messing with it!

I am obsessive with every single shave!

That is, after 2nd pass (I don't do WTG at all) I can feel the remaining whiskers that need clean up (with my fingers) and I clean them up. I don't do any skin stretching though.

My single shave occurs every day. I think Chris and I were cut from the same cloth. Even after I'm done,, and long out of the bathroom, If I feel anything,, back I go.Just knowing a single whisker is there drives me nuts.

I admit I was obsessed with a single pass tying to get as close as I could.
This started and ended with a Merkur Futur.
I dialed it up to the point where any slight mistake with pressure or angle would leave chunks of my face on the counter.

Not a fun relaxing shave. However, when I got good at it, I could zip a BBS shave easily in one pass (still with trouble on my neck, but whatever)

Then I tried some other razors. A tech, a slim, &c.
There is no way I could get as close, but if I enjoyed shaving so much on one pass, then two passes would be twice the fun!

And so I learned to slow down and enjoy the shave. Now I pretty much always do two passes. I can still go one pass with the Futur, but I prefer two.

Tried that once and end up with red blotchies on my neck that have been there for like 6 months. Never again. Good luck with you but no thanks.

Yes, I'll bet we've all done it to some extent at one point or another. I still catch myself trying to get BBS on the trouble spots on my neck. The only way for me to get there is with a very sharp blade. So far, Feather, Astra, and Iridiums can do it for me.

I can't do it with a Red IP. No matter how hard I try, I just end up let down, enredified (shave-induced pain/irritation), and feeling dirty for trying it yet again. I want to love those Red IP blades, but I think I might just have to finally admit that my mileage kind of stinks with them.

Every time I have been really obsessive with a shave I have ended up with irritation and blood. I find that I have gotten my best shaves when I don't overthink things.

I do this every once in a while. Not often, mind you, but once in a while.

Took a few tries until I could do it without razor burn. I can even get BBS on the upper lip, rubbing ATG in the mustache.

Never!

However, my shave was ridiculously close this morning after pass #1. I considered stopping for 3 seconds and did my other 2 passes. Loved it. Proraso shave with a 13/16 straight!

Eh, I tried that once. I've got such sensitive skin and an incredibly tough beard that it left my face in a very not-fun state. Now I just go for super-DFS, or what I'm now calling X-BBS. (cross-bbs, means smooth in 3 out of 4 directions, coined by holli4pirating in the straights section)

Oh yes, and it never ended well...untill I got better soap. Tallow is my friend, I have gone from 2 passes to 4 every shave just cause I can and it's fun!

I re-watched a bunch of Mantics videos and now focus the fourth pass on J Hooks and Blade Buffing...on the fourth pass! Better soap and Lather has made this possible now I can safely obsess on each shave!

I do my three passes and finish out the rough spots with J-hooks and buffs, but after that, I'm done. Anymore than that, and my face hurts.

Pretty much the same here. I really like the results I get with buffing and J-hooks.

I have become VERY fussy about my shave since i started using a de, when i used multiblades i was just happy to get done and get out of the bathroom asap.

Keep practicing. When you get this phase down under 2 minutes, just call it blade buffing. :biggrin1:

LOL. I think I'll try an iridium tomorrow instead of a red personna and see if that takes a little less time...the way my beard is, it takes awhile to get really, really close for ATG. I can get a BBS XTG with two passes.

Watched Mantic's video...seems that I have been doing the Gillette slide and blade buffing for years, just didn't know there was a term for it.
