Anybody try and make their own brush knot?

Hi I was wondering if anybody had any experience making their own knot? I was thinking that it would be cool to make a knot out of black bear hair and an antler for a handle...

If anybody has made a brush knot any info on how to do it would be great.

I have never done this or anything like it but what I imagine you do is that you need a a tube of some kind the size of the knot, lets say 22mm. Then you have that round tube and create a mold around it so you get a "slot" in the mold that is 22mm wide.

Then what I guess you do is that you pour down some kind of molten plastic there and preferrable have your hairs ready in a knot and push the ends down the plastic and keep the knot there until the plastic has cooled down and settled.

Now this is all just speculation of course so I wouldn't follow these steps!

I am really curious about this as well, I would be thinking you could use a resin to place the hair into to create the plug on the knot. The plastic is not a bad idea, it would be worth trying. I would get the hair into a sleeve or tube to hold everything together while setting the hairs.

sounds interesting but probably not something I have the patience for, good luck. post some pics if you go for it.

You might try horse mane hair first. I think stacking 10,000 bear hairs in the shape of a bulb may be a little tedious and it would probably be to soft (no back bone). The horse hair could be gathered, washed and bundled together tightly with a zip tie. The base end could then be trimmed and glued using a thin epoxy. Then shape the top of the not with scissors. Presto.
You can have one of SWMBO's horses to try it with. You have to take the entire horse though.

This is something I have a plan to try eventually. I've figured out the mechanisms in principle. Just need to give it a go someday.

I haven't tried making my own brush...I do trap and hunt them however...
