What's new

Anybody know about the "Shrp Shavr" razor?

I've been thinking about picking up an open comb single edge to try. I came across this "Shrp Shavr" with an open head design and a hollow handle with drilled holes that looks unique, but I can't really find any information on it. I figured someone around here will know if its any good and can use modern blades okay. Thanks!

Wait's Compendium says it takes a ribbed back blade. Trademark first used in 1920, though the patent was filed in 1908.
The date the trademark was first used does suggest that standard blades were widely available at the time. I would say there is a good chance that a standard blade will fit.

This model of the shrp shavr does accept standard single edge blades.

I have an identical one sold as an advertiser for Meyer Bros. Drug Co.

However, the head on this one is a bit different than the head on the one with the holes in the handle.

Wow thanks for the info. That's a more thorough description than I was even hoping for. I'll try to pick it up and see how it goes. Thanks!

Cool razor btw.

Cool. Please let us know if it does or doesn't when you get it.
I've been thinking that it would be great to create a list of vintage SE's that will accept modern blades. There are quite a few of them.

That is a great idea, let me know it u want a wiki page for it or just a thread.

It's just a thread right now. I'm hoping to get some more input. I know some members have razors I don't have which take standard blades, and then there are the autostrop blade mods. I've never done that. Once we get a nice long list, then maybe a wiki page can be made of it... sort of organize a disordered thread.

OK, in on it........

To answer: yes, they do take Gem blades, with the spine. Earl, if you want to "try before you buy", LMK, and you can test mine. They're a neat bit of history, but not a "must-have", IMHO.
