Any Pipe Smokers out there?

Bought my first pipe this weekend from a smoke shop called Up in Smoke. Chap that assisted me was very helpful. I bought a beginners pipe for about 25 bucks, a three in one tool, some pipe cleaners, and a bag on Aristocrat tobacco (a bourbon/cherry wood blend that he said was very popular). Smoked four times.

Any good blends that you all could recommend?

I'm a casual pipe smoker - so, not addicted - maybe once a week at most. I started off with the aromatics but as time went on acquired a taste for the single malts of the pipe tobacco world. My current faves are:

McClelland Blackwoods Flake
Esoterica Penzance
Esoterica Stonehaven
Samuel Gawiths Squadron Leader

for the occasional aromatic I like:

Samuel Gawiths Firedance flake
McClellands Townsman Cavendish Blue
2009 Peterson Christmas blend - this one is great and the casing is very light and enjoyable with a great room note.

You should check out www.tobaccoreviews.com.

Now you have me thinking about a nice Sunday night pipe!! :001_smile

Good for you! I have four pipes and I love them to death! Try a good English blend like University Flake, a premium aromatic like Tastemaster or Plumcake. Try some of the "gas station" blends, like Captain Black. Who knows, you might like them! I went through a Captain Black phase myself. Most tobacconists carry their own house blends that are usually quite good. Look on the web for good deals on tobacco. www.paylesspipes.com is a good site to start.

Have fun with this! Its definitely a mark of distinction. You definitely get a lot of attention when you light your pipe in a bar.

Thanks for the Help. I realize that this will be a journey and not necessarily a destination. To me, learning to handle a pipe will be like learning how to shave. Anything worth doing well is worth doing poorly.

Congrats and good for you! I like to recommend McClleland's "Frog Morton" as a good starting point. Cool smoking and very forgiving with a non-offensive room note. For "drugstore blends" give Carter Hall or Prince Albert a try. Good luck.

I was going to send you a group invite but I see I was too slow on the uptake and you already joined.:w00t: Glad to have you!! There is a growing supply of info that I hope will add to your enjoyment of this gentle hobby.

I am smitten with Pipes as well starting first last April and then got back into it in a bigger way in the past month or so when I acquired a gaggle of GBD Made in London pipes from member Ben.... lately I have been picking off some interesting additions on the bay as well..... This one pictured is on it's way to me and will be needing a bit of a restore but ohhhhhh what an elegant smoking pipe it appears....

Perchance the man that helped you was John? If so, we have a common pipe smoking friend.

I'd suggest the Navajo mix at Up in Smoke. Burns slow, great for a beginner because you don't want the pipe to burn too fast.
