What's new

Any other Frank Zappa fanatics here?

Thought I'd ask, you guys are an unpredictable bunch. :biggrin1:

I've always found something about his music addicting. when I'm on a Zappa kick, it seems like I have to go through the entire discography.

(yes, that includes Jazz From Hell.)

TV dinners by the pool. I'm so glad I finished school...

Another Zappa fan here. My favorites include "Absolutely Free", "We're Only In It For The Money", "Lumpy Gravy" and his later works that are more like modern Classical music than rock.

We're Only in it for the Money is so brilliant - I keep forgetting to mention the Mothers.

While I love every recorded moment, I'm nitpicky. I find his jazz to be a little too indulgent, and his below-the-belt sex humor to be a little much, even though I'll play my MP3s until they all wear out.

Anything he does that's tightly packed composition, though? Ohhhh, yes. That's why I love Lumpy Gravy so much.

Some of his gospel-influenced satire is just brilliant:

"There's a big difference between kneeling down, and bending over."

Here is FZ's first TV appearance, 1963, with Steve Allen on The Tonight Show.

What movie is being shown with the music? Just curious.

I saw Frank and the Mothers in Louisville in 1973 or 1974, great show. Opening act was Bob Seeger.
I saw FZ live in Norfolk, VA sometime around 1980-ish. I thought he sucked. No stage presence at all. He was totally absorbed and didn't even acknowledge that the audience was there. That may be his style, but it sure did not work for me that night.

The concert was in a fairly large auditorium, and it seemed like 9 out of 10 seats were empty. Even though my friends and I had bought the cheapest seats available, waaaaay upstairs, there was no problem for us to go downstairs and sit in the second row, since there were so many seats available. If we'd gotten the idea sooner, we probably could have had front row center.

Athough I was severely disappointed at seeing him in person, that didn't prevent me from continuing to enjoy his music that I had on cassette.

That was the only decent clip I could find of that particular song - good question, though. The footage is great. (Maybe it's from Spartacus? Haven't seen it in years, but one of those guys does look like Kirk Douglas.)

I'm 25, so I can't say I've seen him live.

His son, though? Zappa Plays Zappa is a great show, even though Dweezil is one of the least charming frontmen I can think of off the top of my head.
