Another Alt Innsbruck question

I received a bottle of Alt Innsbruck yesterday. The front label indicates it's a cologne, not an aftershave. The ingredients are the same as those posted in the "Dissapointed by Alt Innsbruck purchase" thread: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=147584

So, is it a cologne or an aftershave? And if it's the former, is it ok to use as an aftershave? I did this morning and after an hour I haven't noticed any negative side effects.

Thanks.

I know everyone is using it as an aftershave.
Back in the days "Cologne" was many times used as after-shaves.
"Real" cologne isn't perfurme or EdT.

Bottom line is; use it as an AS & you'll be fine!
It smells AND feels great

1. There's only one Alt Innsbruck - this has been confirmed. The new label just adheres to stricter requirements about labeling by using INCI names on the back for the four ingredients on the front. In case you were wondering.

2. It's a dual-role cologne/aftershave. You might say a heavily scented aftershave. Either way, it's an excellent aftershave with an excellent, long lasting scent.

this from an earlier thread in the Aftershaves forum:

There are a number of products out there that are labeled "cologne" (or "all-purpose lotion" or "tonic" or... ?) that are great aftershaves. I've observed that long-time wetshavers will use any product for any purpose (and don't pay too much attention to the label)... but newbies can get hung up on doing things "right."

So - from my shelf here are a few colognes (and other things) that I've used with great success as aftershaves.

4711 edc (there is an aftershave in this line)
Alt-Innsbruck
Hoyt's Cologne
M&L Florida Water Cologne
Osage Rub
Pahsana Lotion for Hair
Pinaud Lime Sec edc
Pinaud Citrus Musk edc
Pinaud eau de Quinine (hair tonic)
Pinaud eau de Portugal (hair tonic)
the entire Royall line (labeled "all-purpose lotion" or cologne)
The Royalls are reveiwed in Cologne Reviews - Alt-Innsbruck in Aftershave Reviews. Osage Rub in Aftershaves (there are no Rub Reviews).

So - use your Alt-Innsbruck as an aftershave & love it!

I also have vintage Yardley Cologne for Men - and Yardley Black Label cologne - these too work as AS, though without that strong alcohol bite.

In my opinion, the main difference between a Cologne, and Aftershave is merely the staying power of the scent.

Aftershaves tend to vanish within 30-45 minutes, Colognes are strong enough to last throughout the day.

The actual makeup of a Cologne/Aftershave may be similar. Although a cologne may lack the Glycerin/ Propylene Glycol added to aftershaves to give them moisturizing properties.

Go ahead and use it as an aftershave. I have many times and it works great. However, I tend to use the Alt-Innsbruck ASB and the cologne as a cologne. The ASB is worth checking out if you enjoy the scent.

It's really a very unique scent. When i first bought it i had mixed emotions about it. After using it for about a month it is one of my favorite scents.

glad I found this thread. My AI showed up from WCS today and I plan on putting it to use shortly.

wasn't sure how to use, but will use like my 4711 I have been enjoying lately. wet face, pad dry, then pour a bit in cup of hand, rub hands together and apply to face.

Be careful pouring it out.... it comes out of that bottle in a hurry. I actually ended up getting the little atomizer for this one.... but it's not necessary.... just be careful. It has a strong (but wonderful) scent that will stay with you for a while. Nice menthol action too. Enjoy!

thanks, and i noticed no nozzle, minimizer etc, like the 4711 has. i'm hoping i can fit something in there like the top of the RR Preshave lub, so it comes out slowly rather then pours.

I like the face-feel a lot. The scent was unbearable to me, however. I wonder if it were not used as an afershave... that is, if it weren't so close to my nose, if it would have bummed me out less.

Maybe a good idea. Anything is worth a shot. All I remember is thinking that if I continued to try and pour it out without something that I would end up wasting quite a bit of the AI goodness. I'm not a huge fan of atomizers for aftershave either but it's better than dumpage. I much prefer the pour and slap routine.

You can use your thumb to cover all but a bit of the opening when you pour it, then you can shake out a small amount.

thanks. i'll try that tomorrow. i found the perfect valve, but it's a tad high for the cap to screw back on. i'm sure i'll find something, but the thumb trick will work for now.

on a positive not. i love the scent and wife gave it the ok too. it lingers for quite a while, which i love and left my face feeling quite nice. i use a tiny bit of 444, rubbed it all together in my hands and applied to freshly shaven/rinsed face.
