What's new

Andriod users. Upgrade to 2.2 (froyo) if you can.

I've just upgraded the Android OS on my HTC Desire from 2.1 to 2.2 and it's now got a fantastic feature which is internet wifi tethering. I can hook up to 5 wifi devices to my mobile phone and they can all surf the internet using the phones 3G connection. How cool is that? I've done it with cables before but via wifi and multiple devices takes it to a whole new level.

Stock Froyo is a great improvement over 2.1, however all Droid phones are upgraded by an over the air upgrade. The good news is that there is a huge droid following and custom designed ROM's have been created for most Droid phones. There are many out there and looking through the android forums can find the recommended ones. I personally have a HTC Eris, and am running Kaos Froyo ROM.

I am waiting on Froyo upgrade for my Samsung Epic 4G this month (according to Samsung). I heard good things about it so I can't wait. I actually came from Windows Mobile 6.5 (been using Windows Mobile for years) and I am in love with Android. By the way, wireless tether application is available for 2.1 as well. I am not sure if rooting is required or not though.

It highly depends on the model and the service provider. My Eris through Verizon did not support tethering in 2.1 as far as I'm aware. It does however support it now that I've rooted and installed a custom ROM. The Eris is not scheduled to be officially updated to 2.2.

The version of 2.1 that came with my HTC Desire didn't support wireless tethering but the 2.2 version does. It's great.

Tethering is really nice to have. Just use caution on how much data your using. Just about every company has caps on data plans. I work for T-Mobile in the NOC and we are rolling out all kinds of really sweet upgrades on the network. It sucks T-Mobile recently put caps on data plans....:sneaky2:

Caps aren't that bad.. the only time I really use my data plan is when I am in the middle of nowhere. Otherwise there is almost always a wifi hotspot close by I can hop on.

For those of you who don't want to wait for your phone to get an "official" update or will not get an official one to Froyo a great resource is http://www.xda-developers.com/.

I have an HTC Aria that I had the cyanogen rom on it up until a recent "accident" where i needed to revert it back to stock to send it for warranty work.

In most cases I'd agree with you. In my case, I work for Australia's largest telecommunications company (Telstra) and have an unlimited use, company provided mobile phone.

Root your phone and you can apply updates when they come out instead of waiting. Even if the update is on a different handset. Plus there are optimized android releases that are much much faster than the official ones.

Wifi tether has been out for years, but your phone had to be rooted.

Google xda developers.
