What's new

An Electric Repair.

No I'm not an electrician. But it was only a matter of time before I had to play with my new toys. Took all of two days. I knew the scales were damaged on my Electric. The seller even pointed it out to me. I figured no big deal as I knew I could fix it. And here it is. An odd ball job but maybe you could use some info along the way.
The piece of the scale that was missing was a loop near the hinge. It's 1/16 of an inch in size and curved. So I grabbed an old junk scale in bakelite figuring it was strong enough. I made the looping piece and had it ready.
Now I didn't want to use butt joints as they aren't very strong. Especially for such a small piece where the joint surfaces will be. So on the left side of where the loop was to anchor I was able to grind out a "tunnel" for my curved loop to fit into. On the right side I cut back the broken piece and gave myself a larger surface to attach my loop. More surface area means more glue surface and a stronger repair. A little more work but hey, these scales are so fragile as it is any help I can give them so much the better.
You can see the broken section, the piece I made as well as the anchor points I created for my little loop.

The pencil point was for reference as is one of these photos with it sitting on my finger. I'm also showing the right anchor point for my loop as well as the initial glue up. That blob will be removed once the epoxy sets. It also looks like my loop is diving under the larger section on the right. At this point the loop would have had to be so small to achieve this that a butt joint would have failed the first time you touched it.

Now after I did all this with the blade still in the razor , I decided to break it down. Now I've drilled out many a pins but wouldn't you know it the washer wasn't centered and my drill bit slipped down the side of the pin creating another hole in the scale! I said "Darn it !" ,,,, or something to that effect.
So now I have another self inflicted repair to do.
I used my old scale to make up another piece 1/16 round as if it were a pin. Then I flattened one side of it. Since the original hole for the pin was right next to my new hole I made I only needed half a rod to fill the hole I made when the bit slipped.
I glued this little pin in the hole I made and let it set. I then sliced off the extra protruding piece and then ground it nearly flush. I finished it by sanding to get it smooth.
In the one picture you can see the half pin . I could have made a round one just the same but I was wondering if the bakelite being harder than the plastic wouldn't push the bit when I had to re-drill the hole off center . The last shot is the redrilled hole and some polishing. Looks decent.
I had to do this as the hinge pin wouldn't have been solid and the washers I needed to use wouldn't have covered this mishap.

Speaking of washers. Some of these razors don't use what we use as far as washers go. The smallest I find are the #0 ones in brass or stainless. That just doesn't cut it when doing a resto. So I had to make some smaller ones. The #0 , being as small as you think it is just doesn't look right on some razors ( the second photo) . In this case it just wouldn't fit as it's too big. These are stainless and will polish up nicely . The pin is NiSilver which I work harden to stiffen them up a bit.
Here are some comparison shots from the stock #0 washer, the ones I made, and the original. To me , having them right makes all the difference. Especially here where the stock washer just doesn't fit.

I also found the patent date for these scales. Neat! And on the opposite scale someone thoughtfully tried scratching in their name. I sanded it out and polished it smooth.

The last part of the resto is the very cool leather pouch it fits into. It looks like a regular pouch with snaps that meet in the middle. Once you undo the snaps and lay the flaps back you see an embossed gold Electric insignia. The razor can slide in or out from either end. I am guessing this piece hasn't been treated in some time so I applied some neatsfoot oil mixed with Lanolin to soften it and help it along.
I naturally cleaned up the blade but didn't push it too far. It's not new,, so it shouldn't look it. But it sure was tedious polishing all those intersections and getting the nooks and crannies. I also removed some casting flash along the way. Just cleaner now.

I'm much happier. Now , where are my stones to hone here up!

And, don't be surprised when I show up with a near duplicate set in black Horn on one of my next razors. I just love these scales and I think Horn would be a bit stronger than these. They're too crazy looking.

When I read the title I thought for a moment you were gonna repair a philishave or some other stupid electric gadget...
As always you did a great job, I wish I had your talent, your patience and determination to only deliver the best work that can be done!!!

Excellent; great job on the repair... I seen an auction on ebay recently. A large group of razors that included one with similar scales, in a different color.

These are NOT mine, I just grabbed the pic from the auction.......

Aw 'cmon, that's not fair. Don't you know what happens when you wave a red cape in front of a Bull?
That's the same razor. The blade looks a bit rough but now I know there are other colors what am I going to do?

Well they didnt sell in the auction, If youre interested Ill get you a link. He had an amazing collection but had something like $9k for a "buy it now" Could have been worth more than that all totaled...I have no idea That pic was just a small part of it..

Well here I went looking for them but couldn't find them.
You say he was asking what for them?

Its well warranted. Sweet job on the fix.
I havn't seen, and can't find this new GD you speak of?
Please provide link or pic asap. lol.

I can't at this moment. Since I'm 'judging' this year Legion asked me that if I had time to build a GD razor. So i did just for fun. I guess I'll post it after the winner is announced.
It's simple ,but cool.

Well i look forward to being put to shame once again. Lol.:a30:

Don't be so sure. it's rather subtle but that's where the difficulty lays. It's not a 'theme' razor but it does have it's characteristics none the less. It's more a study in control.
