What's new

Am I doing it wrong?

I see a lot of soap/cream companies also sell bath soaps, shampoo bars, deodorants...etc. Seems like many members here use them, so am I missing out on something great? Are there any recommendations? I'm definitely all for using products that are better for my overall health or better for the environment.

All you really need is a good face soap and shampoo without a heavy detergent content. Everything else is frill and marketing.

Disagree with Mr. Scott, respectfully.

I gave up using liquid shampoo almost two years ago. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. Shampoo bars are the way to go. I am big fan of Mystic Waters shampoo bars, now available in two scents!

To the contrary sir; I believe you're in perfect agreement with Mr. Scott.

Most bottled shampoo contains the detergents I suggested avoiding in my thread above. Like you I use bar shampoo, although only about 80% of the time. I like Leggett's currently, the one with Tea Tree.

This all really depends on you skin and type of hair, I think, I have tried various shampoo bars and they were a disaster. I use a mild commercial shampoo and it treats my hair just fine. I have to use a lot of conditioner anyway (I have longish curly/ringlet hair), so if it has a slight drying effect, it really doesn't matter to me.

Artisan soaps are all over the place and I have used some decent products. But I have a few very inexpensive commercial products that work great for me--readily available at my local stores. Occasionally I spring for a very fine triple milled French soap--but I did that more when I made a lot more money.

As long as the products you use treat your hair and skin well, I don't think you are missing anything. OTOH is you have issues with what you are using--well then perhaps you should check out something else.

Perhaps true, but isn't most of what the membership engages in just frills?

Yes, the OP is missing out on something great.

If he enjoys using different shaving soaps and creams to shave, he can also enjoy fantastic soaps and shampoos. Many of the shaving product manufacturers produce items that complement their shaving line. The only limit is ones budget and desire to be pampered.

Health benefits, in my experience, yes. I had skin issues for which a dermatologist told me to stop using soaps, full stop, period. At the time I was young and impressionable. Perhaps a fool. Many years later when I took up proper wet shaving, I found out that the issue was cheaper drug store products. DRH, T&H, C&E, MdC, Klar, Penhaligon's, and some odds and sods, have been in my growing rotation over the past fifteen years with no issue but for another addiction.

Environmental concerns... At minimum they all last much longer per gram than regular soaps. Their longevity offsets a good portion of their additional cost. Several have minimal ingredients and presumably a lower environmental impact. The pricier ones use natural scents rather than chemicals. MdC would be the best example.

Like shaving soaps, after shaves, and colognes, the choices are very personal and best made by visiting a stockist for the desired item. If you find yourself in NYC a trip to Min NY, Pasteur's, C. O. Bigelow, or Cambridge Chemists would reward you handsomely.
