Alum Block or Speick splash?

Im thinking of adding a stinging, bracing type 'something' to my aftershave routine and these two seem to fit the bill. However, I want to know which one to get, so any input from you guys would be helpful and much appreciated. Rememeber, the block is way cheaper so im leaning more towards that.

Thanks

I haven't used the Speick ASL myself, so I can't speak for it, but I'm a big fan of both the alum bar (check your local Indian grocery store for a cheap one - I get mine for $0.99) and witch hazel for after-shave toning. You can get generic WH at WalMart or Family Dollar for less than $2.00. I have noticed a definite improvement in my skin after using both of these cheap and easily-available products. Good luck, and keep us posted.

I tend to forgo the alum block when I use my Speik. Otherwise, I use alum + another aftershave. It works for me; Speik is pretty nourishing.

I didn't care for the Speick splash too much to be honest (traded it off). I don't think it compares at all in terms of bracing/stinging to the Alum Block. The only thing that comes close IME is the Osage Rub... It smells like Vick's Vapor Rub, but it is intense!

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies. I think I need to try an alum block as its the original aftershave and just to say that ive tried it.

I tend not to use my alum block as a general aftershave, but if I get weeper nicks I use alum on them. Poof, no more weepers. I follow that with an aftershave splash.

If you like splashes I recommend Speik in general, is good stuff.

Speick is ok but it doesn't stop weepers very well when compared to the alum block. You may still need to keep it around as it won't replace it.

However, I am very happy with my speick and love the scent.

I've tried to love alum, but I find it an unnecessary step in my morning routine. If you want something bracing, Osage Rub is indeed great. If you want something that goes far beyond bracing--that makes you want to jump out of your skin--try Pinaud Clubman Virgin Island Bay Rum. Spash it on and you'll have a moment or two where you think that it didn't have any effect. Then you'll be painfully reminded of Major Toht in Raiders of the Lost Ark when he finally glimpsed the Ark. Bracing takes on an entirely new meaning.

Speick Aftershave Lotion contains Alum and is one of the better splashes on the market. An alum block is a good shaving investment and will last a long time, I like using it especially in the winter with a favorite balm to follow. I generally use soaps and splashes spring/summer and then shave creams and balms fall/winter. The alum block has been a nice addition to my fall/winter routine.

Or you could just toss pure vodka on your face. Both feel about as pleasant since neither of them are aftershaves.

Thanks for the bulletin. Several generations of American men stand corrected.
Happy to help!

Serious post though, Pinaud's Bay Rum, Lime Sec, Citrus Musk, all of these are cologne splashes. They contain fragrance, alcohol, and little else, none are formulated for use as aftershaves. That's corrected easily enough by adding a bit of water and a few drops of glycerin. Definitely the better way to go if you're going to use these as an aftershave splash.
