What's new

Ahh, Tech razors...

This morning, I think I probably just had my best shave yet. I broke out my new chromed ball end Tech and the feather blade provided with it as a sample, and gave it a go. I wound up nearly BBS without any nicks, cuts, and only the slightest hint of some irritation. Feather blades with these razors impress the hell out of me!

I have to say, the whole YMMV thing seems to apply here just like it applies nearly everywhere, but damn it, I'm sold on the Tech design. To be fair, I've only tried two designs, the Gillette ball end (My granddad's old gold plated one, and my newly purchased chrome plated), and the Lord 'L5' Metallic, which I understand is a lighter and cheaper version of the 'Premium' reviewed here on B&B. I do prefer the Gillette for the superior weight and balance, after some experience, the Lord razor is a good razor, but I prefer mine with a bit more weight.

I don't know what it is about TTO designs, but both my (now sold) Fatboy and my 'black-tip' Super-speed always let me down and carved me up. If you're a TTO fan, please, enjoy what works for you! I, personally, just happen to love the Tech design, and I think everyone new to DE shaving should have the chance to try one.

It's my first and I found it to be a very mild shaver. Perhaps too mild? I loaded it with a Shark blade and found that I needed an extra pass to get a clean shave. My usual razors are an L-series Schick injector, a Fat Boy and a late 40's Super Speed.

I will say I liked the Tech design. I really like the flatter head but it might not be aggressive enough for me. I need to use it a few more times and maybe experiment with different blades before a final verdict, though.

+1. Love it, but it's too mild for my beard. I prefer a Fatboy at 5 or 6.

To be fair, they do seem to be pretty mild, but mine always get the job done pretty quick if I use decent blades.

One pass is enough to make me presentable, tack on a second pass ATG and I'm pretty clean.

I agree the Tech is wonderful and I love the slim head it has.

I like the Old Type pocket editions which are like a Tech with an open comb and bit a bit more aggressive blade angle.

I find that a three pass shave with a Tech is a great thing to do when resting from an shave that was a little on the punishing side (Treet blades, anyone?).

I love the Tech, and the ball end is probably my favorite, closely followed by the fat handle. I even like a travel Tech now and then...

I have to say I like my tech as well. I usually do 2 or 3 passes with my tech, then I use an open comb razor for my clean up pass. Seems to work well for me.

I have both ball-handled and thick-handled Techs. I find that with a sharp blade, if I do 3 passes ( 2 WTG, 1 ATG), then some careful cleanup (mostly ATG), I can get BBS MOST of the time. They are very nice razors, but as with all razors, TECHNIQUE RULES THE SHAVE :thumbup1:

I love Techs. I own both a well worn ball end Tech, and this wonderful Cooncatbob creation. It shaves just as awesome as it looks!!:drool:

My old no date code ball-end Tech is my go to razor. I also like my '56 Super speed. I ma waiting on a new Lord Tech to compare. For some reason the fat handled techs do not seem to be as effective for me; maybe the small hands :001_smile

I had the same problems with the fatboy. If I adjusted it to be friendly, it just wasn't shaving. If I adjusted it to shave, I got sliced up.

I have a fat handle Tech. It is quite a nice razor as long as I have a good sharp blade in it. I find I have to do extra passes if I have a mild blade in it.

Check out the Edwin and Jagger DE89 or DE89L for a beautiful well made modern tech. I just love mine. The perfect razor for me with feathers . . .

I just used mine for a great shave this morning. I wish Gilette had never stopped making these razors, but fortunately for us they made a lot of them.

And fortunately, they were build like tanks, and hence capable of taking a lot of abuse. So even well worn models still shave perfectly. :thumbup1:

I just acquired a ball-end Tech myself. I like it. It is mild -- perhaps a bit milder than my Superspeed, but far milder than any setting of my Adjustable.

I'll try the above recipe of using a Feather in it. I've got a boatload of Red Personnas that I was using in the Superspeed and so far in the Tech. I used to use Feathers, but they were just slightly too aggressive. They might balance out the Tech very nicely.

Hansel -- glad to see you got a good Tech, I know you had been looking for one. congrats!
