Aftershave Recommendations

Gentlemen, I've not done such a great job in acquiring quality after shaves.

Right now, my favorite is the Proraso AS splash. It has witch hazel in it, and it works wonderfully. Using that as a baseline, can you recommend me a couple that will perform as well as that?

Thanks in advance!

Aqua Velva and Alt Innsbruck. Both of them pick up on the cooling qualities of the Proraso, both are superb.

Count me as another vote for Aqua Velva. I can't believe I blew off this stuff as long as I did, figuring anything that well known had to be some kind of joke.

I have really been enjoying some of the mentholated aftershave milks from The Shave Den. One nice bonus is that they sell all of their aftershaves in sample sizes. The samples last me for a couple of months, so "sample" is a bit misleading. They are well priced, and excellent quality, in my opinion.

My two favorites, thus far, are iced peppermint and iced cedarwood ("iced" is the designation they use for mentholated). My wife likes the scents, as well, which is a nice bonus.

Paul, there is plenty to choose from but just staying with the classics:

Speick, Musgo Real, Pitralon (all of them are a little different), Bay Rum (lots of brands to choose), Tabac, 4711, Floid (Italian or Spanish) and you should probably add a bottle of the Proraso Liquid Cream.

You also have the drugstore variety:

Aqua Velva (Ice Blue, Sport and Musk), Skin Bracer, Nivea (balms), Clubman and all the other Pinaud labels, Old Spice and good old witch hazel.

Have fun choosing as this is just a small list!

I don't really like the AV Ice Blue, but the Knock-off version Swan is another story.

AV Musk, is awesome however :thumbup1:

Paul, this is one area I'm interested in as well. Seems the AAD hasn't hit me yet, so my aftershave collection is, well, not collected.

Mail Order $$:

Speick
Alt Innsbruck
Spanish Floid (either version)
The Swiss Pitralon is very well regarded for it's healing/soothing properties.

Local Chain/Drugstore $:

Aqua Velva Blue or Musk
Pinaud Clubman - if you like a bit of a burn. Usually at CVS.
Skin Bracer

Oh, and get Nivea Sensitive ASB while you're there. Great stuff for about six bucks.

I am not familiar with the Proraso splash myself, but I'd highly recommend Ogallala Bay Rum. It also has a lot of Witch Hazel in it and though it can burn quite a bit I find that it quickly goes away to leave you with no irritation and a great feeling face. Plus they have great customer service over there.

This is also an area that I have recently developed an interest in.

If mentholated is what you are after, Aqua Velva is pretty good stuff.

For non mentholated;

Clubman is hard to beat.

Harris Sandalwood is very very nice.

I recently picked up a bottle of Cade AS. I absolutely love everything about it except for the crummy screw top. I can see this becoming my go to AS.

Besides the previously mentioned Speick, Musgo, and Spanish Floid, I recently acquired a bottle of the vigoroso and it is very nice stuff. A few others to consider are La Toja, very nice and Lucido, almost no scent and a nice little menthol kick.

Cheers,
David
