Aftershave and soap/cream compatibility

Hey all,

I am not a big aftershave guy (I know, blasphemy!) and right now I only have proraso as splash, AoS lavendar lotion/balm, AV ice sport splash and proraso pre/post cream. Before, I was mainly using AoS lavendar shave cream, proraso green cream and vdh pucks so compatibility of scents was not an issue. Now I have acquired a variety of soap/cream scents and I do not know if they will work well with the limited AS scents I have. I have TOBS Sandalwood, TOBS Eton, Truefitt 1805, MWF, Speick stick and edwin jagger sea buckthorn.

Do you guys see any nasty combinations in the future if I do not upgrade my AS arsenal? I don't want to be walking around oblivious to the fact that I smell like a turd. I personally think that proraso splash and AV ice sport are mild enough and dissipate quickly enough that I should be able to get away with using them with just about anything but I just wanted to see what your advice and experiences have been (especially with proraso as I love the feel of it :001_tt1:). Thanks!

No opinions? I find that hard to believe from this crowd. I guess a lot of you probably did not make it past the first line of the post!

I do a lot, in fact, most of my shaving at night after dinner and before bed. As a result, I feel free to experiment which is what you should do. Keep in mind that from what the experts say, your body chemistry results in differences in scent from others. If true, then it's hard to know what will work and what won't. Have fun. Make mistakes. Get messy.

While it can enhance YOUR experience to match scents between soap and AS, it probably doesn't affect anyone else. The soap scent should be gone after a thorough rinse. Just don't leave any in your ears, and you'll be fine!

Unless I'm having some sort of theme day (Old Spice, Rose, Bay Rum), my lather and AS rotations are independent and completely without regard for each other. No complaints or funny looks, either. :001_smile

Looks like you have EJ Sea Buckthorn shave soap. They also make a matching aftershave. Although it's very expensive. To be honest, I don't think it's a big deal whether you match a soap and aftershave fragrance. Unless your soap has a huge scent, it's not going to interfere with the aftershave.

This may be the opposite of what you're thinking of (I'm going to recommend a cream to go with your Proraso.... rather than an aftershave to go with the creams you currently have), but I've always thought that the TOBS Jermyn St. scent matches regular Proraso splash pretty good. I just noticed that you have some TOBS creams in your rotation so I figure you like the way they perform. That being said, I agree with many that you don't necessarily have to match the scent of your cream/soap with your aftershave. Personally, I like to stay in the same arena of scents. I won't typically mix lavender scents with citris scents for example.... but I don't think it matters ultimately. Right now, I shave in the evening, and I'm currently going through an ASAD, so I like to experiment alot.

I probably go against most advice you'll find here because I tend to use an aftershave and cologne of a different make. I try to "match" the scents a bit, if I use a spicy aftershave I try to use a spicy cologne. Usually the aftershave fades within a few hours so I never really seem to have an issue. I never had any concern with soap or shaving cream since I rinse with witch hazel anyway and it usually washes any remaining scent from the soap or aftershave.

The scent of shaving soap is very short lived; it shouldn't last longer than the duration of the shave. Therefore, pay no attention to trying to make the scent of your soap, and aftershave mix. It's a total non-issue.

Now, making the scent of your aftershave, and cologne match (or at least complement each other) that's a totally difference issue.
