What's new

adjustable razor recommendation

I am in the market to purchase a adjustable razor to add to my collection. I am also, looking to buy new as I prefer to start with a clean slate so to speak. I have been looking at a few different models from Merkur ie. the Progress, future, vision etc... and I wanted to see what everyone on here recommends for a good adjustable. The reason I want a adjustable is for a couple different reasons first and foremost is functionality I want a versatile razor that I can use everyday for low growth or something that will handle a larger job like a week plus. secondly I really just want one..... thanks for any advice !!!

Of all the razors I mentioned the progress was actually the one I was leaning towards.... I just like the long handle version I believe it's the model 501 as well as the simplicity of the razor itself. I'm not familiar with the gilette slim but I am going to check it out now. thanks for the advice !!

With your restriction to buy new only, you're getting a Merkur razor--there are no others (aside from NOS) on the market.

For a treat, though, consider the "Mergress"--a Progress that our member Mer has tweaked and improved. I have only seen his work, but the word here is that he takes an OK razor and makes it sing.:thumbup1:

If you are lucky enough to find any of the Gillette adjustables in NOS condition, grab it and run. Even a used Gillette is a superior tool, IMO, than any of the Merkur adjustables.

I have a Gilette Slim, a Fatboy and a Super Adjustable. All nice vintage razors and they all shave nicely. That said, I seem to rely mostly on my long-handled Mergress for daily shaves. To me, this razor can be nice and mild or really aggressive (to me) based on growth or just how my face feels. I assume the Progress shaves the same, but I bought the Mergress instead. Just my two cents. Good luck.

If you put it to a vote the Progress or a variant of same will likely win. It is a great razor.

Having experience with both however my vote goes to the Futur, if you think that you might like a razor that is larger, heavier, and very much different from "run of the mill" design.

Progress/Mergress is a great razor. I tried a Futur but felt that it was less maneuverable. I love my Mergress so much that I havent really been plagued with RAD, until I started looking at stainless razors recently.

+1. I have two Mergresses, a regular and XL version. They are my favorite razors.

The easiest way to get one is to buy a Progress and send it to Eric (Mer) for modification the way you want. Here's a photo of mine.

You can just PM (Personal Message--B&B's internal "email") Mer, or go to this site: http://www.leesrazors.com/products/Mergress-Long-Handle-Safety-Razor.html

funny you say this as I have already done all the above..... Mer is not accepting private messages so that shot that down..... I went to leesrazors.com and it is now saying it N/A ..... I'm going to post a request in the thread he started back in 2010 and see if I get a reply from him and go from there maybe we can do this via email or even by phone how ever he prefers. All I know is that Mergress makes the progress look 100x nicer as ironically what made me 2nd guess the progress was the cheap looking plastic knob but the mergress now that is a sharp ( no pun intended ) razor. thanks again for the tip I think that this is the best of all worlds new, custom, and functional.

I just sent Mer a PM and did not have any problem with it.

Possibly because your a moderator ? IDK I just tried again and the message that popped up says it's a vbulletin " Mer has chosen not to receive private messages or may not be allowed to receive private messages. Therefore you may not send your message to him/her.

If you are trying to send this message to multiple recipients, remove Mer from the recipient list and send the message again." I was able to send him a email though so I think I have this under control at this point I gave him my email as well as my phone number.

Yes, you are right. He told me that he responded to your e-mail. Eric is a great guy to work with.

Amazing a few moments after I sent the email Eric had already responded to me !! great service which is rare in this day and age. I'm on my way !!!! Very excited.

Yes he provides great service. One request I had for him was to paint the markings so my older eyes could see them. This he did and the razors look and work great.

+1 that...I neglected to request painted numbers on my Mergress and regret it. I've seen some pics of the Mergress with painted numbers and it looks very sharp. I'll eventually paint them myself I suppose. Enjoy the razor.
