adding scent to soap question

i have read alot here about milling soap and adding fragrance. i would like to try this. is it simply a matter of milling the soap and adding your favorite cologne, bay rum etc. and reforming the puck? i have some unscented van der hagen i really like and would like to try putting my own sniff to it. suggestions?

First, there's no such thing as unscented VDH soap.

Second, there's no need to mill a puck of VDH; it can be melted in the microwave. Use 8-10 second bursts and wait a few seconds in between.

Wait until the liquid is cooling before you add your scent (if it's really hot it will burn off a lot of the scent). Add the scent dropwise until you think it smells good, then make sure the scent gets mixed in with the liquid.

Once it cools and hardens, you are good to go.

 This is pretty much how I made up my VanderSpice except I used a double boiler to melt it on the stove instead of the microwave.

according to kingfisher there is no such thing as unscented van der hagen soap. i guess my nose aint workin good cause all i smell is soap. guess i should have been more specific. i am wondering about adding bay rums, after shaves, or colognes. can these be used this way?
thanks

I suppose VDH isn't technically unscented, but it does have a very neutral smell. You can certainly mix in whatever you like. Half the fun is finding out what works. After all, VDH is cheap enough that it won't be a big deal if something doesn't work out. I'm seriously thinking about making myself some Van Der Velva.

It would be better to pick up essential or fragrance oil to add. Colognes and aftershaves are diluted. You can find EO and FO online and health food stores generally carry EO's.

Good luck with this, it will be fun to create your own personalized scented soap.

I just sprinkle a few drops of Old Spice or Aqua Velva or Brut in the lather bowl before making lather with VDH or Williams. That way I can pick what I want that day.

VERY true. I wasted about 10ml of a cologne trying to flavor some puck shavings and after all that, it didn't fragrance it AT ALL. We're talkin about $10 worth of cologne down the tube. EO is the way to go, and there in lies the art of blending a frag.

VDH smells like Grey Flannel cologne, but much weaker.

It doesn't smell like soap. LOL. Soap usually smells like "soap" because it has fragrance oils in it. If you have been using commercial hand soaps or bath soaps all your life I guarantee you have never smelled an unscented soap.

Get some Mama Bear's unscented and compare your VDH to that; then you'll be able to see that it actually has quite a bit of scent.
