Adding D-rings to Strops

I have the Filly Strop which I love. However, I was wondering if there was any easy or cheap way to add a d-ring to the bottom. I would love something more comfortable to hold on to while stropping.

I suppose stitching a flap of leather round the flat side of the D ring and onto the strop would be the only way but stitching leather must be a chore for the uninitiated! Unless there is some bonding agent that can be used?

Sewing leather of that thickness and temper can be very hard if all you have is one of those combination needle/awl/spool contraptions that most novices use at first. Instead, buy at least a middling quality leather sewing awl & handle, a few proper needles and some waxed thread to match, you can probably do that and have better quality tools for about the same money. All that's left is keeping the holes perpendicular to the leather and spaced evenly. You need nothing more than a straight edge, perhaps a pair of dividers to mark stitch length, and patience. It's much easier to do than it appears if you take your time with it. Don't sew dry leather if at all possible; if you "temper" it by thoroughly wetting it and then allowing it to partially dry until it's just damp, and the awl will slide right through. Using a bit of non-tacky wax on the awl helps on the sterner stuff.

As for gluing, barge cement or contact cement works well on dry, non-greasy leather (which excludes stuffed leathers like latigo). You'll need to skive/shave off any ragged tags off the rough side of the leather first, if that hasn't been done already. Pay particular attention to getting glue all the way to the edges and you should have no problems with it holding together.

You can take it to a shoe repair store, if there's one still around and have them sew a flap of leather to hold the D Ring on the end.

All you need is a way to punch holes and a flat head screwdriver. You can get all these on ebay or at tandy. Then you can just buy a few chicago screws and you have a detachable D-ring!
