Add Salt?

I read that many of the better restaurants add a pinch of salt to their coffee.
Wondering if that is something I have been missing out on?
Question: Do you add salt to your coffee?
Thanks

My understanding is that restaurants used to do this to coffee that's been on the boil for a long time and is starting to taste stale and nasty.

For me, if the coffee tastes like crap, I will put milk and sugar in it - if it's available. But not salt even if it is available. I have tried it, just didn't see the difference and I really really don't need to start salting my morning cup of coffee. But I don't put lime in my beer either, although I will put beer into orange juice. I've heard - and I've heard myself saying it - that is the way to enable your body to absorb the vitamins in the OJ better.

I've been to a lot of great coffee places, and I have never seen this.

Sounds like what The Nid Hog said above is a more likely explanation

I do, takes a lot of bitterness out, though I usually only need to at Dennys, everywhere else is either good or beyond the point of saving.

If they're truly better (highly subjective word to begin with) and serving coffee then they shouldn't be adding salt IMO. I generally don't drink restaurant coffee anyway as it's typically an afterthought at many restuarants. There are very few coffee shops that I find worth going to and they don't have to rely on the crutch of adding salt to their coffee.

Try it and see for yourself. Some people enjoy it. It's impossible to tell you if you will or not.

Nope. Salt's used to reduce bitterness. If the coffee's too bitter then other adjustments should be made IMO (better beans, lower brewing temp, freshly brewed coffee, etc). That said, coffee's as subjective/YMMV as any other topic on this site so do what works for you.

I had a neighbor that did this. Never noticed any difference in the taste between her coffee and the coffee I made.

The people I've known who add salt, add it to the grounds before brewing, not to the finished coffee. No difference as far as I could tell so I've never done it with my coffee.

However -
Some of the best tea I've ever had was brewed in a drip coffee maker with a pinch of baking soda added to the tea leaves before brewing.
I suppose it made the finished product less acidic, though I don't know what it would do to the taste of coffee. I'll try doing that one of these days and find out.

Needs milk and a bidet!
i've heard of adding it to the grounds THEN brew. as mentioned above. never heard of it being added to the cup.

supposedly it reduces bitterness.

I tried it because I heard the same things. I didn't like the taste in the end so I still drink salt-free coffee!
